Officers Who Shot 12-Year-Old Holding Toy Gun Refused To Give Him First Aid

The Cleveland officers who shot a 12-year-old boy holding a toy gun then failed to give him first aid for nearly four minutes. The boy was finally administered first aid when a detective and FBI agent arrived at the scene.

The boy was also shot within 2 seconds of the officer arriving on the scene.

Well their not going to help someone who could be a threat to them or others, I could understand.

You do know that police officers are held to a higher standard than the general public as they are supposed to be trained professionals? You do realize that even a suspect is still a citizen, still one of the people the police are supposed to protect and serve? You are aware that police officers are to put themselves in jeopardy in order to save the lives of the citizenry?

In their defense nobody noticed the callouses on the knuckles of the officers who shot the boy.

You pull a gun on cops, it could be 1 second. What difference does that make?

But I agree there is no excuse for not rendering first aid, though I'm not quite sure what they could do, short of covering him.

Somehow the next two police officers on the scene knew what to do, even if you would not have, but perhaps you are not a trained first responder as the police are. They administered aid. But it was too late.

As they taught us at the Red Cross, the first minutes are crucial.

He didn't pull the gun on them they arrived and started shooting before accurately assessing the situation.

Watch this video to see how quickly ordinary cops shoot people that aren't a threat when they don't comply immediately to their barking orders. Surf all the related videos if you need more. I found there is an endless stream of bad shootings by police against the public.

There is no incentive to give him first aid. If he survives, everyone gets to hear his version of events.

Why this cop (a ten year veteran) pulled withing ten feet of the boy is a question that needs to be answered. This action put his rookie partner (joined in March) in an impossible situation. You can see the pellet gun is quite real in appearance. I guess there is normally an orange tip at the end of the barrel to indicate it is a toy. No irony intended.
Why the dispatcher felt it was not relevant to relay to the officers that the caller repeated that he thought it was a toy gun is another unanswered question. I would assume it is their job to separate the wheat from the chaff but is it chaff?

Cleveland mayor responds with a toy gun buyback. No shit. I'm waiting for the city swear jar.
Imagine the uproar if we tried to stop selling toy guns.

Cop cars have loud megaphones, should have come in more slowly and talked to him from about 20-30 meters and asked him to drop the gun.

That kind of stuff only applies to white 12 year olds.

If it's a black kid you shoot first, then just wait for the kid to die without ever thinking of helping him.

Really? A kid is playing and some adult starts yelling : drop the gun and in all likelihood, the kid looks around to see who has the gun. The kid wasn't armed. Why would he think the police were talking to him?

I'm curious as what exactly their training dictates. If this is what they are trained to do then the officers are innocent of any potential wrongdoing.

And for the record, yes, you'll occasionally find a good cop out there, a person who is mature and calm and able to connect with people. But most of those folks have safer jobs. The guys in the squad cars are for the most part poorly trained and provincial in their thinking. They all know that their primary job is to protect themselves, which they do.

This isn't evidence of anything. You can't see what the guy did. If you're challenged to put the knife down and come at the cop of course they're going to fire.

It's at least evidence that the cop was poorly trained and certainly unqualified. This video is just as disturbing as the other where the cops are so quick to use deadly force. If this is the best the cops have to offer than more people need to carry guns just to protect themselves from the cops.

What exactly did the next cops do? Not much from what I see.

They're not EMTs. Cops have some basic first aid, but they're not capable of stopping massive bleeding.

And as others have said, the toy wasn't identifiable as one.

Cops yelled at him and he did not do as instructed.

Don't know about you, but my parents taught me to always be polite to cops, always do what they say and move slowly. They have a very dangerous job and I don't blame them for being skittish.

If you think most cops will wait for the other guy to shoot first, like they do in movies, you're very naive.

It is beyond fucked up to think it is capital offense to fail to immediately obey a police officer.
