Oklahoma Police Officer Shoots Teen Carrying BB Gun

There was a similar incident last year in Anaheim, police shot 70 rounds into a car, through the windshield. One officer fired the other disciplined but no charges !

Newly released body camera video shows the two officers firing more than 70 times, most of it through the windshield of a moving car. Nava died at the scene. "We have dismissed the primary officer involved and filed a notice of intent to discipline the other," explained Anaheim PD Chief Jorge Cisneros.

Outrageous.

Police bodycam footage from an Oklahoma City shooting demonstrates the blurry line between officer safety and accusations of police overreaction.

Bodycam video in link.

Didn't this cop ever play with capguns, BB guns and pellet rifles? He shot so fast the kid had no time to react. The mother was right when she said the officer fired without giving the person time.

Also the officer said that race was not an issue but we all know it is. Perhaps it's not a conscious issue for him but it certainly is an issue. Good the kid is alive.

Say the magic words and you're allowed to shoot.

BTW, Oklahoma is an open carry state.

Whether I like it or not, in the USA the predominant view in practice is that life of a police officer is more important and valuable than the life of a civilian. Until that changes, these types of tragedies will continue.

Unless this teenager pointed the bb gun in the direction of the officer, there was no reason for him to shoot. None. Add in that he literally gave the victim no time to comply with his order, and this ought to be unacceptable in a civilized society.

The lives of police officers are valuable, and no one is saying that their lives do not matter. But so do the lives of their victims.

Nothing will likely happen with this officer, including additional training, until he kills someone in the same situation. Even then I doubt anything will happen.

As a kid who carried and played with BB guns all the time I never once considered that I might get shot because of it.

Another problem today is anonymity. These officers don't even know who they are protecting. Do police come to schools anymore and talk with kids like they did when I was a kid? Do they walk the streets? Do they get to know people? Do they knock on doors? Police used to know their neighborhoods and the people in them.

All this used to happen when I was a kid.

0.6 s is kind of a short time for anybody to react. The cop should have allowed more time for the kid to comply.

By the way, this is the gun in question.

Looks just like the real thing.

The kid is lucky though. He survived and doesn't appear to be too badly injured either.

Police Constable Joseph Grantham (died 1830) was the first police officer to be killed whilst on duty in the United Kingdom.

Joseph Grantham was a police officer in the Metropolitan Police Service which had been formally established in 1829. While on duty on 28 June 1830, he intervened in a fight between two drunks in Somers Town, London, during the altercation Grantham was beaten to death. At his inquest, the jury returned a verdict of "justifiable homicide", possibly due to dislike of the new police force. Grantham was held to have contributed to his own death by "over-exertion in the discharge of his duty".[1][2]

The lives of police officers are valuable, and no one is saying that their lives do not matter. But so do the lives of their victims.

Perhaps this needs to be explicitly laid out during training and at the beginning of every single shift.
