Philippines ends Military Cooperation Deal with USA

Legalize illegal drugs now. What next, legalize pedophilia, sharia law and slavery? How about we do away with the judiciary altogether?

Drugs involve consenting adults, pedophilia doesn't.

If you want me to consider something wrong you need to point to who is harmed, and why that harm would be lessened by prohibiting the action. The data is quite clear, drug prohibition increases the net harm.

Another thread on legalizing drugs.

Legal or otherwise society as a whole is harmed by drugs. Legalize it and from what I know medical costs will rise.

We see it with oxy. Legal as all hell, prescribed by doctors.

Pot has been legal in Seattle functionally for a long time and heroin has essentially been decriminalized.

I was walking through a park a block away and passed a young man in his early 20s shooting.

Along with wine and cheap liquor pot has been added to people hanging out on the streets. It is everywhere. The next 50-100 years will see how it all plays out.

Why are you guys talking about legalizing pedophilia and drugs? It has nothing to do with the thread.

Once upon a time in America there used to be an alcohol prohibition, and illegal bootleggers and backyard distilleries flourished. Then the prohibition ended, which by all accounts was a good democratic thing to have happened, and not before time. Except that alcohol kills and maims millions of American annually.

Legalizing prohibited drugs would get rid of drug pushers and bring the price perhaps down to a packet of paracetamol level prices. But the death toll from such a move would dwarf the death, maim and misery of alcohol.

Reefer Madness lives!

The thread is about Dutarte targeting drug pushers by execution or jailing them and throwing away the key. Tell him to legalize the drugs instead of punishing the pushers and see how far you'd get.

It sort of drifted away from the Philippines ending defense agreements with the US and looking towards China instead. A move the Philippines will regret in the near future.

Because the drug companies lied to the doctors and they based their judgments on those lies. The illegal status doesn't keep the druggies from getting the drugs, it just means they have bad quality and uncertain purity--which kills a lot more than the drugs themselves do.

And we have people smoking tobacco all over the place even though it kills far, far more than pot. Even more than heroin.

You're conveniently ignoring what the death toll was during prohibition. Note that after the illegal markets developed the consumption was about 2/3 of what it was before prohibition. However, they were drinking stuff of lower quality, lots of cases of methanol poisoning. Not to mention plenty of gun battles between the bootleggers. Note that the people put off by prohibition were generally the lighter users, the ones least likely to be harmed by it.
