I think it's sad that such an insignificant incident as this has made several of the nation's largest newspapers. I first read about in the New York Times. It's obvious that the man was an asshole for verbally attacking a woman because, OMG, she had more items than were supposed to be in the express lane. It's even more absurd that there were two empty lanes open and he told her she should have used one of them. Why the fuck didn't he simply take his three items and go to one of the other empty lanes, instead of being a jerk?
I will add this. I shop at Publix regularly and there have been many times when a cashier in the express lane motioned me over to her lane, even though I had far more items then the 10 or 15 on the sign. Maybe the woman didn't count her items. Maybe she missed the sign that said, "only ten items", or whatever.
I personally doubt this was racist, although it could have been sexist. Would this man have said these things to my tall scary Arabic looking husband who has a huge head of thick curly hair and a beard? Or does he only attack women, pregnant women at that? I'm betting he wouldn't have said a word to my husband if he had too many items in the Express lane. My husband can be a scary looking mother fucker when he wants to look intimidating. I seriously doubt anyone would call him an SOB for having too many items. But, a pregnant woman is an easy target for an angry, impatient male. Apparently this one couldn't control himself so he verbally attacked the woman, for the sin of OMG, having too many items in the checkout lane. The horror!!!! I've had people in front of me with too many items countless times. I might be mildly annoyed if no other lanes are open, but I've never been tempted to publicly shame a person over it. It would say a lot more about me, and my intolerance than about them, especially when I don't even know if the cashier might have motioned them to come into the lane.
I can understand the woman feeling threatened, as anyone who lives in or near Cobb county or many parts of Georgia, come to expect that most men, as well as a lesser percentage of women, are carrying concealed weapons everywhere they go. And, with all of the racist nut jobs out there lately, I can see how she may have misinterpreted the man's intentions. He was just acting like an asshole, possibly a sexist asshole. They are everywhere. Nothing to see here. Please NYTimes etc. stop putting this type of minutia in the paper. People are rude to each other regularly, especially when an area is congested and busy. I don't like it, but nobody was shot, and nobody was wounded. Can we please talk about something more important now......
That's my two cents on this. Oh wait. I posted more than two cents worth. I guess I'm just a bitch. A proud bitch at that.
