Rape victim suing county after being jailed following courtroom collapse

Nah. Just Derec's usual 'sympathy' for rape victims.
Nah, just a reference to the OP title.

Sure, it sucks what happened to her, but then again two life sentences for rape is quite excessive when many murderers get far less.

The article states that he was a "serial rapist". A 'serial' murderer would be likely to get a death sentence in Texas.

Sheesh Derec. What happened to you in life that you have no empathy for rape victims but instead for rapists?

Just because I do not think life in prison is appropriate for rape when some murderers get set free after a few months[/URL].
Should that really be the sticking point? Criminals in completely different situations have completely different punishments for completely different crimes, therefore this punishment is wrong...?

I'd think it would be a better argument to try to justify a specific time in prison for a specific crime, or specific circumstances, rather than comparing apples to buggywhips.

And, whatever you think the punishment for rape should be, would you or would you not increase that punishment for a serial rapist?

Horrific.

Just to clarify, was the DA that put her in jail the same one that was prosecuting her rapist? IOW, they were trying to make sure she was alive and available to testify against the rapist, and didn't care how much further harm they caused her in the process.

That is the kind of destructive insanity that results when efforts to get a particular verdict become more important than decency, fairness, and other principles of the legal system of that must be protected and given more importance than achieving a preferred result in any given case, even if it means some of the guilty go free.

I got rejected by every girl/woman I was interested in for one.

You need to have empathy, listen with your ears not your mouth, and be compassionate if you want a nice lady.

Who says I have no empathy for her? Just because I do not think life in prison is appropriate for rape when some murderers get set free after a few months.

Anyone can see by the written record you've displayed over the years that you have MORE empathy for those accused of rape and those convicted of rape than you have for those who claim to have been raped.

I realize that our political stances are strongly influenced by our personal experiences, and we often share anecdotes to explain why we believe/support/oppose the things we do, but Derec's private life isn't an appropriate topic for the Politics Forum. If he's agreeable, y'all can head over to The Lounge and talk about it there.

*ETA: Apparently I was being quoted while I was still working out what I wanted to say. What Toni quoted in the following post is the first version.

Please don't. Derec has derailed enough threads like this.

Also, Derec's private life isn't an appropriate topic for the Politics Forum. If he's agreeable, y'all can head over to The Lounge and talk about it there.

I don't disagree. I just got the impression that something happened in Derec's personal life that set off some of his posts. He doesn't/won't talk about specifics in The Lounge, so this was my rather unsuccessful attempt to get him to write about it here.

My bad.

He's explained that to us MANY times.

It's because women refuse to have sex with him.

As for the OP, I'm tempted to think there's some bad journalism going on here, some details that were omitted because popular outrage makes better headlines and therefore better clicks. It's still a pretty shitty thing to do to a witness, let alone one who is actually the victim of the crime, but I get the impression that this is the kind of case that would have ended badly no matter how they handled it.
