Refugees... why any drama at all?

In Sweden there's quite a lot of drama about the Syrian refugees. Very much a doomsday atmosphere in the newspapers. But all the researchers are sitting bewildred by our reactions. They don't understand why the drama or where the fear comes from. There's certainly no rational reason to fear anything. The numbers show that we will manage fine. The only people who feel they can expain it are the psychologists, ie people just like drama. And that's just all it is about. But is it? I don't find that explanation satisfactory. It's not even Xenophobia. We've got plenty of Middle-Eastern immigrants in these parts.

What do you think this is all about?

The Swedish people in my part of Minnesota were brought over the work in the mines after it was found out those pesky German and Cornish people were not desperate enough to work for starvation wages and began forming unions and using the political system for reform.

It comes come from being afraid that you are going to lose what you have. Call it cultural inbreeding. If Swedes were arriving in these other countries you'd have the same reaction. It's called tribalism, and it's quite natural.

Once a person gets over that instinctive reaction to fear those people living in the next valley who may come and destroy our village and steal our crops and kill us - all things which certainly happened in our ancestral past - things get better. It's a behavior which has been selected for or it wouldn't be part of our make-up. Problem is not all of us are able to manage that fear because we're still engaged in conquest, we're still living tens of thousands of years ago.

But although there is a survival advantage to not being inbred, there is also a survival advantage to being inbred. Just depends on the environment, or maybe we should say environments.

It's all relative. All immigrants are always bad, it's just muslims are extra-ordinary bad and what is more important is that they are not getting better.
