Rep. Matt Schaefer (R-Tyler) put forward an amendment that would make it illegal to terminate a pregnancy after 20 weeks, even if a fetus “has a severe and irreversible abnormality,” effectively forcing families with wanted, but unsustainable pregnancies to carry to term at the behest of the state and against the advice of their doctors or their own wishes.

Schaefer said that suffering is “part of the human condition, since sin entered the world.”

How do so many of these sick fuckers get elected?

This is one of those American/English language things, right?

You say 'First floor', where we say 'Ground floor'.

You say 'Sidewalk', where we say 'Pavement'.

You say 'This man should be elected to the state legislature' where we say 'This man should be committed to a secure psychiatric facility'.

Right?

Right?

Surely?

Don't forget Texas has it's own language which is neither American nor English.

Four GOP members voted against the bill with this amendment attached to it. Two of them are doctors. They have some crazy idea that this would be unethical, puts the mothers at risk and so on.

So naturally the other Republicans have to question these people's dedication to being pro-life. Pro-life apparently does not include the life of the womb donor.

The slut woman is just a holding shell for the precious baby Jesus created like the can that surround the Bud Light or the box on a Tyson TV dinner: wholly disposable.[/sarcasm]

That proposed amendment is bad enough without DailyKos' exaggerations. It talks about nonviable (but technically alive) fetuses (like for example anencephalic ones), not those that die in the womb.

As to the question how these people get elected, there are two things.
- State legislatures have relatively small and often homogeneous districts that enable nuts of both parties to get elected. And of course, those nuts are more likely to make headlines than more sane members.
- that said, there is a particular brand of crazy fundamentalism in contemporary Republican party. That is why I usually vote Democratic despite my strong misgivings about many of their policies.

Brings to mind the woman who died in Ireland because she was having a miscarriage, but doctors wouldn't remove the fetus because of anti-abortion laws. The laws possibly could allow it, but they were not clear enough so the doctors didn't know for sure if it was legal or not. IIRC

Ah yes, the "nuts of both parties". One nut says women have to take nonviable fetuses to term, the other nut says were shouldn't call protesters thugs.

Oh, which side's nuts was it that appointed Justices that wanted to continue to enforce laws against homosexuality? Oh wait, those weren't nuts, that was the Republican Party in general.

I am never surprised by some batshit proposal by an individual. However, nuts this individual state legislator is, his batshit crazy amendment PASSED. So, he is not alone in his nasty stupidity.

To be fair, his law, left to itself, seems to have died in committee.
His tactic was to amend it to another law. There's no telling how many passed the law for the amendment's sake, or how many passed the amendment for the law's sake.
Well, except for those that had their little pro-life-prayer session on the floor before debating the bill...

My cousin carried to term a foetus with anencaphaly that she was told wouldn't survive more than a few hours after birth, because legally she wasn't entitled to abort it as her life wasn't in danger. She could have done what lots of Irish women do and travel over to Britain (Liverpool seems to be the place to go) and had it safely and legally aborted there without fuss, but for reasons I'm not sure about she chose to carry it to term.

It's a really sick situation to force someone into.

I don't think that case would be covered by this law--it's about fetal defects, not the risk to the woman. It's vile enough without piling on questionable scenarios in an effort to make it look worse.

There's also the issue with anencephaly that sometimes the head grows too big for a vaginal delivery--thus forcing a c-section if she's not allowed a D&X abortion.

(And for the conservatives--that's a case where the D&X is the medically best procedure.)
