I hope they catch these people really soon. Who knows where they are headed and what they may do next. Madness.

This is not an issue over gun control. Nor is it one of a lone person having a break with reality. It's some kind of terrorism, a group of three (it seems) who are driven by unknown ideological, social, and cultural forces...an alienation caused by who knows...at this point.

If it is pure domestic terrorism, apart from Muslim motivations, then it suggests the development of new or growing alienation and anger from domestic sources.

This is going to be very interesting.

The last word I got from the OP link was 14 dead. It is really not too big a stretch to understand this kind of event in San Bernardino. The economy in the inland empire has been on the rocks for at least the last 30 years. That makes for a lot of gangs and a lot of unbalanced very poor people. It also is a hotbed of gun rights people. It really is not a surprise to me...only that it took so long to materialize.

I spent some years of my life in Victorville, in the high desert, in three different decades, the 70's, the 80's and the 90's, building and rebuilding cement plants. At no time when I was there were there good economic times. There was a home building boom, but the homes were built for commuters into the LA areas in the valleys below.

I lived at one time in San Francisco. I could rent a large, good house in Victorville (Apple Valley) for less than I was paying to rent a garage for my car in San Francisco.

I also lived in Victorville for about a year in 1992..same story. The big thing then was a place called George AFB. Desert cities seem unable to prosper because there is always a bad resource balance. They can of course go the Las Vegas route and do gambling but even that does not make them stable. It takes more than money to make a place fit for a city. Many desert developers just thought all it took was money. To my knowledge the area was always depressed.

Update on suspects: 2 dead at shootout, one suspect believed to be in custody, and one is believed to be in Church/House. Police trying to get the one in the Church/house to surrender.

Police now searching house-to-house in neighborhood. Suspect may now be on foot.

It could just be a feud between a few people and part of the Department of Social Services. It does not have to be Muslims. We are simply going to have to be patient to find out who and what this is about.

One witness said they were dressed in black, saw their faces and they had beards/facial hair showing. Reports elsewhere say they had full military gear and AK-47s and were wearing masks. I also heard elsewhere that they had pipe bombs to throw at the police and were possibly planning a bombing. If the latter is true, then yeah, that is too prepared for it to be a spat over work or whatever. But it still might have happened at the San Bernadino County Mental Health Department annual Christmas Party.

They were very stupid. They chose a hospital for disabled people as a target, as if that will draw people to their cause and they chose a location that not far away from where a whole police department was doing a training practice.
