"Reverse Mentors" for Male, Pale, and Stale professors

Isn't it a liberal bragging point and a conservative irritation point that colleges lean overwhelmingly in a liberal direction, most professors being liberal, progressive, or far left?

So we can therefore conclude that progressives need to be mentored to not be racist and sexist?
This is a "problem" mainly in STEM where people are no that crazy about these issues, they understand that women are simply not interested in STEM.

Having worked in STEM for decades, no, the basic view of most women I've discussed is that they got kinda tired of dirty old men leering at them and hitting on them, having their ideas ignored repeatedly, and things of that nature.

(and as a black guy in the same profession, the whole "Oh my god please don't turn into an enraged killer thug supernegro I beg of you" thing gets old very quickly - as do the obviously racist jokes that could come from a Fleisher-era cartoon or Amos & Andy, the open disdain for my intelligence, and so forth). Some of it is subtle and likely subconscious, but other stuff, and some of it, as I said, is overt. Also, stop touching people's hair.

And the homophobic/transphobic stuff I've heard...I mean, damn, I've said some ignorant things in the past, but dudes openly saying, in the office, that they "should go back in the closet" is...even teenage me knew that was fucked up..

As for why it doesn't go the other way - I'd tell you examples of women that were aggressively sexist, of black folks likening random white people to KKK members, or of LGBT people who openly said that cis het folks should be ashamed...but I really can't think of any outside of Twitter jokes and the like - and we've seen how well those go over already.

From the cited article:
“What is understood about unconscious bias is that we have all got it, but the more you learn about it and become conscious of it, the more you can act,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

“While it is well known and obvious that women and minority groups suffer setbacks to their career progression no one really understands why.

“It’s not as if there is any overt prejudice – it is something to do with the way the system is or the way it has evolved and we needed to find out why.”
.

So this is not making anyone feel ashamed of being a white male. It is about making white male senior professors aware of any unconscious biases. Whether this is the best method for doing so is debatable, but I find it odd that anyone would take issue with the goal or misinterpret the goals.

Why should male, white professors be singled out?
I don't know the particulars, but my guess is that the senior professors there are white and male, and that there have been complaints about their behavior.
What is the evidence that they have an unconscious bias, and that say, their mentors do not?
How is that relevant? If they don't have any, then there is no real harm done. And, maybe they and their mentors will learn something from interacting.

Now, I have not been looking for this, but is there any evidence these professors are complaining? If not, why the fuss?

Bullcrap. Having come from Soviet Union system which neither discriminated nor cared to rectify the situation, the real problem is that women are simply not interested in certain fields. How can you explain roughly 50-50 distribution in biology department and 6-94 distribution in physics? Male physicists are dirtier than male biologists?

Which would make this racist if it is then applied to all white male profs. Its like saying "Driving while black" traffic stops are ok because there have been complaints about some black guys stealing cars.

How is that relevant?

Because of the double standard being applied in a racist and sexist manner.

If they don't have any, then there is no real harm done.

Isn't there? If they assigned all the black students, and only the black students, anger management mentors, would that be ok with you? No real harm done? How about if they assigned all female students, and only female students, courses in rational thinking and logic?

Now, I have not been looking for this, but is there any evidence these professors are complaining? If not, why the fuss?

Ask yourself if your view on that would change if they were anything but white and male.

And if it does not, if you think it ok to single out white males for this, and only white males for this, despite "everyone having unconscious bias", how do you think that meshes with the whole anti-prejudice message they are supposedly trying to act for. Not very well.

Egad. What is with all this professor hate? First, people want to give them reverse mentors and now they want them to try and teach rational thinking and logic to females?

Isn't their job hard enough without all of this extra bullshit added on?

Weird. I’m in a STEM field; my sisters are all in STEM fields, and about half of my colleagues (in a STEM field) are female.

It’s almost as if you don’t know what you are talking about. Weird.

Since when is biology not a STEM field?

What situation in the Soviet Union was that that neither existed nor needed to be rectified??

It is. Your point is?
What situation in the Soviet Union was that that neither existed nor needed to be rectified??
What?

Since it is for one university, it does not apply to all white male senior profs. So, you can calm down,

Because of the double standard being applied in a racist and sexist manner.
You have no evidence of a double standard. You are assuming one.

Isn't there? If they assigned all the black students, and only the black students, anger management mentors, would that be ok with you? No real harm done? How about if they assigned all female students, and only female students, courses in rational thinking and logic?
Your examples are based on a straw man.

Ask yourself if your view on that would change if they were anything but white and male.
Nope.

I think you need to calm down, because you really have no clue what is going on here or what is driving this initiative. The report is not very informative. This practice may be as deplorable as you make it or it may be fairly benign.

And, did you even bother to think that it is possible that these senior professors who have power and authority may be creating more difficulties and problems with their "unconscious bias" than others who do not have the power or authority?

Who is going to mentor the female minority "mentors" about their own unconscious bias?

It's impossible for non-white, non-male human-persons to have biases, unconscious or otherwise. If you think one of them exhibits a bias, rest assured that it's just "satire".

Your post is just satire.

Maybe the need to be mentored to tolerate more diversity of thought.
