Roseanne Reboot

It's not that it wasn't meant to be an insult, it's that it wasn't necessarily meant as an racial insult.

Now, I am aware of the history. But, we will never move past that history as long as we are perpetuating it.

No, what you want is for people to forget history to remove all context.

Calling an African American and "ape" or "monkey" is a well-known racial slur that goes back to colonial times in our country. Racists know this, and they use it intentionally for that purpose. Technically, humans belong to the hominoidea family of primates, which includes all the apes. However, the racist trope was in common usage well before that was known to be true.

Are we ever allowed to call black people apes? Should that not entirely depend on context? When Desmond Morris wrote "the Naked Ape" did he get in trouble for it when recommending the book to black people as well as white people? Is there a similar problem with calling people "Animals" rather than plants if your audience happens to be made up of a particular racial minority?

It is like the word "nigger", there is no context where it is viable. Well, one... there is just one time.

When Desmond Morris wrote "the Naked Ape" did he get in trouble for it when recommending the book to black people as well as white people?
That is the dumbest attempt to justify 19th century racist language ever!

A context calling humans apes is no where near equivalent to calling black people apes.

No, I do not want people to forget history, just not to be beholden to history. To move past it.
We will never solve race relations until we stop doubling down on racial double standards.

Yes, I know the history.

Racists know this, and they use it intentionally for that purpose.

The easiest way to blunt the racist use of it is not lose one's shit (like cancel Roseanne and then uncancel it without her) every time such a comparison is made.
Because without moving away from this and other double standards there will always be racial tensions because blacks will be seen as "other" as long as they insist on being treated differently. What we certainly should do is differentiate between an individual being compared to an ape - regardless of his or her race - and a whole group being compared to apes.

Bye the way, I think the Democrats/Left do not really want to improve race relations. Without the race issue, >90% of blacks would not vote for Democrats.

It is ridiculous to think that allowing or tolerating individual racist comparisons will improve race relations.

If it's individual, then just because the individual is of a certain skin color does not make the comparison racist. You are exemplifying the very mentality that is holding race relations back.

No one lost their shit. Roseanne crossed an unacceptable line of behavior (once too often, in fact, as she had been given several passes previously) and now must face the consequences of her choices.

Because without moving away from this and other double standards

How is there a “double standard” in any of this? Three strikes (or more in fact) and you’re out. One standard.

there will always be racial tensions because blacks will be seen as "other" as long as they insist on being treated differently.

“They” aren’t insisting on being treated “differently;” they—like everyone—are expecting to be treated with respect and when someone in a prominent social position in particular takes a cheap shot like that, then there should be consequences.

What we certainly should do is differentiate between an individual being compared to an ape - regardless of his or her race - and a whole group being compared to apes.

Roseanne’s whole point was to be racist. Nobody compares individuals to apes, unless you mean “as strong as an ape” or the like. Here, make it very clear and just replace “ape” with “filthy nigger” and that’s exactly what Roseanne was saying.

So should we now differentiate betweeen an individual being called a filthy nigger and a group being called filthy niggers? No, we should just blunt-force trauma kill the asshole shitting on other people to raise themselves up as that would only improve our species.

Well, “kill” is too strong. Sterilize and lobotomize would be acceptable. Or they could just grow the fuck up and educate themselves, but that has proven to be grossly inadequate to expect so much from such ignorant pieces of shit.

Bye the way, I think the Democrats/Left do not really want to improve race relations. Without the race issue, >90% of blacks would not vote for Democrats.

Among the many stupid things you’ve posted, that is probably in the top five and I’ve only been posting here a short time, so congrats.

Bullshit. You want to be able to use racial slurs and not be held accountable for it.

Oh, now I see the problem. Derec is from the future where everyone is equal and so he doesn't understand how some words are applied more to others in an offensive way. Well, Derec, here in the present you have to be careful of that shit.

Double standard? If one must insult an individual based, it must be on who they are, not what they are. This is an important distinction that seems lost on some people. The dreaded N-Word is used by African Americans. They have taken ahold of it. There is absolutely no reason for a white person to ever say that word... unless they like Dr. Dre and are rapping along (see Chris Rock). And for some reason, that really bothers some people.

They want to make with racial slurs. It is pathetic. 21st Century and we are still dealing with this shit.

The unfortunate reality on this planet is that calling a specific black person an ape is racist. Maybe in 200 hundred years if people are around, it won't be. But I doubt it because humans are social and tribal creatures.

Your alleged ignorance of human behavior and history exemplifies the very thinking that enables and promotes racist thinking.

Are we ever allowed to call black people apes?
No. how hard is this?

You can call humans a type of ape. If you single out blacks as apes, or monkeys, you're wrong.

It goes even beyond that. This guy got fired from ESPN for his use of the term "guerilla" when describing Venus Williams' tennis game!

https://nypost.com/2017/02/14/espn-fired-me-for-guerrilla-comment-on-venus-williams-suit/

LOS ANGELES — A tennis commentator dropped by ESPN for a remark about Venus Williams during the Australian Open sued the sports network Tuesday for wrongful termination.

Former tennis pro Doug Adler maintains he was describing Williams’ aggressive style last month as “guerrilla” tactics and not comparing her to a “gorilla.”

He apologized for his poor word choice but was let go from ESPN mid-tournament.

Adler claims “emotional distress” in the filing in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging he was wrongly branded a racist and has lost other TV opportunities because of the controversy.

But that's not "going beyond" that.
That's the same thing, but with a poor vocabulary.
Like the guy who caused the nation to lose their shit for properly using the word "niggardly" in a sentence about a budget.
Ther aree words you don't use, and there are ignorant people who react poorly to other words, and there are stupid people who refuse to be educated on a topic once their hackles are raised.

"She puts the Gorilla effect on. Charging"
https://nypost.com/2017/01/19/espn-voice-i-called-venus-williams-guerrilla-not-gorilla/
I don't get it. How is "moving in" guerrilla-like instead of gorilla-like? Normally, you think of "charging" as a silver-back gorilla thing, meanwhile guerrilla tactics are referred to as hiding behind trees and fighting from afar but also with tricks because of being outnumbered/out gunned/etc.

Use of the term "guerrilla effect" was a tennis term going back years, apparently:

https://deadline.com/2017/02/espn-venus-williams-gorilla-wrongful-termination-lawsuit-1201911561/

Citing examples from a famed NIKE ad, ESPN itself Sports Illustrated and other outlets, Adler’s justification of appropriateness against Olympian Williams is that the term “guerrilla tennis” is a decades old widely used phrase to “describe a player’s aggressive tactics in the sport.” That is what 15-year tennis analyst Adler says he was doing at the 2017 Australian Open last month when referring to Williams moves on the court.

Shit like what happened to Doug Adler really bugs me. Getting fired, stalling/losing your career over a silly, misunderstood remark is out of proportion with the "offense" committed.

I think the most insane incident more recently was when an Asian sports announcer named Robert Lee was pulled from the broadcast because his name sounds too much like Robert E. Lee:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/23/sports/ncaafootball/espn-robert-lee-virginia.html

I guess he should change his offensive name so he won't upset the snowflakes.

I guess he should change his offensive name so he won't upset the snowflakes.
Oh no. If he did that, then the snowflakes wouldn't have a chance to get their panties in a twist over a broadcaster getting reassigned to a different game because of his name.

Well, there are no trees on the court, but guerilla tactics include anything you do that's, if not illegal, at least outside of the accepted norms.
