A Bible Burning, a Russian News Agency and a Story Too Good to Check Out

WASHINGTON — For some of President Trump’s loudest cheerleaders, it was a story too good to check out: Black Lives Matters protesters in Portland, Ore., had burned a stack of Bibles, and then topped off the fire with American flags. There was even a video to prove it.

The story was a near-perfect fit for a central Trump campaign talking point — that with liberals and Democrats comes godless disorder — and it went viral among Republicans within hours of appearing earlier this month. The New York Post wrote about it, as did The Federalist, saying that the protesters had shown “their true colors.” Senator Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican, said of the protesters, “This is who they are.” Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, tweeted that antifa had moved to “the book burning phase.”

The truth was far more mundane. A few protesters among the many thousands appear to have burned a single Bible — and possibly a second — for kindling to start a bigger fire. None of the other protesters seemed to notice or care.

Yet in the rush to paint all the protesters as Bible-burning zealots, few of the politicians or commentators who weighed in on the incident took the time to look into the story’s veracity, or to figure out that it had originated with a Kremlin-backed video news agency. And now, days later, the Portland Bible burnings appear to be one of the first viral Russian disinformation hits of the 2020 presidential campaign.

With Election Day drawing closer, the Russian efforts to influence the vote appear to be well underway. American intelligence officials said last week that Russia was using a range of techniques to denigrate Democrats and their presumptive presidential nominee, Joseph R. Biden Jr. And late last month, intelligence officials briefed Congress on Russian efforts — both covert and overt — to stoke anger over the nationwide racial-justice protests.

Holy Shit.

You're surprised Russians would make that allegation? Holy shit, indeed.

This is another case of Bill Barr's continuing corruption and the politicization of intel agencies. Trump's apparatchiks.

Barr is truing to use the Durham investigation as an unsurprising October surprise.

Oh Jesus I hope not.
If that's the best they gotz, that's truly pitiful. EVERYONE knows they're going to trot that crap out - they fucking announced it!
I'm sure Trump will refer to it tonight, though it looks a lot like something someone wrote before breakfast this morning.
The asymmetrical thing is that now the Biden team has to game it out by this afternoon...

That Ratcliffe got these Russian generated talking points placed into the record (where they were subsequently determined to be fake by both the republicans and the democrats) and then distributed in the manner by Ratcliffe really makes me wonder where his loyalties really lie.

That Trausti posted it without determining it was bullshit, without checking its validity is "beyond parody".

So right-wingers are saying the Clinton invented the Russia thing up... because Russia has an intelligence "assessment" saying Clinton might be looking into inventing a Russian distraction?

The absurdity probably goes up to the level of insanity because the Democrats' conspiracy to beat Donald Trump contained all of this contrived action... except actually using any of it in public.

Checking its validity? He didn’t even check the text.

Ratcliffe’s appointment was specifically to politicize the post, and his loyalties are with Trump and his party. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...nce-director-nominee-john-ratcliffe-dan-coats

No, no, no. You're supposed to drop a "bombshell" about Hillary Clinton two weeks before the election.

Hold your fire, dammit!

https://www.newsweek.com/judge-rule...-report-redactions-orders-doj-publish-1535456

After receiving the initial report in March 2019, U.S. Attorney General William Barr redacted parts of the report, claiming that the concealed information was privileged. District of Columbia District Judge Reggie Walton announced in March that he would conduct an independent review of the complete Mueller report.

"Based on the Court's review of the unredacted version of the Mueller Report, the Court concludes that the Department has failed to satisfy its burden to demonstrate that the withheld material is protected by the deliberative process privilege," Judge Walton wrote in his Wednesday ruling.

Walton ordered the DOJ to publish previously redacted information involving Mueller's "deliberations about decisions not to prosecute" certain individuals. According to the ruling, that sort of information is not classified as privileged.

Release ordered by Nov 2

This exchange is interesting. Interviewer just tries to ask him who his creditors are he says it is not Russia. But she didn't ask if it was Russia.

"As a favor to institutions that wanted to owe him money."

Apparently someone takes their mortgage email spam seriously!

"The numbers are all wrong."

And proceeds to justify that $400+ million in personal debt isn't that much compared all the wonderful properties he own (some that might even might make money).

In response to any foreign bank...
"Not that I know of... but I will probably...it is so easy problem to solve...a and if you'd like to do, I can let you know who... *wheels turning pondering if this upcoming lie is even too big for him* whoever I owe a small amount of money."

Remember, don't talk to him about smart.

George Papadopoulos pardoned. So is the Dutch guy Alex van der Zwaan...and Flynn was already pardoned.

Wow. Rewarded for covering up things by lying.

Who else will be pardoned?

I wonder how many of these will be challenged, and if the pattern of pardoning personal accomplices and acolytes might make them all the more subject to challenge.
He still has a few key additions that add to the patterrn - all the family, Rudi etc..
Another question - can he "un-pardon" someone if he pardons them and then they say he lost the election or something equally damning?
'Cuz if not, this is truly endgame stuff for him.

Flynn can now be prosecuted for the crimes he plea-bargained down to the one he was pardoned for. No one is going to touch it for 29 days, but then they might.
Then he cannot even hope for a pardon. Plus, he cannot use 5th Ammendment protections.
So, the deal might be, we're going to put you away for 20 years, OR can you explain how your pardon was a reward for covering Danger Yam's criminal involvement?

Paul Manafort and Roger Stone now pardoned.

Why the rush before leaving office? Possible he is afraid of being convicted after leaving office? Or is he just a corrupt lame duck rewarding friends?

Putin pushed Biden misinformation to Trump allies during election
  • Russian leader Vladimir Putin pushed misinformation during the 2020 election cycle about Joe Biden through U.S. media and people close to then-President Donald Trump to try to boost Trump’s reelection chances, a U.S. intelligence report said.
  • In particular, the declassified report, released Tuesday, said that Putin “had purview over the activities of Adriy Derkach, a Ukrainian legislator who played a prominent role in Russia’s election influence activities.”
  • Derkach, who has ties to Russian intelligence, is known to have met with Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, who for months promoted discredited allegations against Biden, now president, and his son Hunter Biden.
It's good that they weren't very successful there.

There are plenty of details of Trump-Russia contacts that continue to remain obscure. What was the extent of the cooperation between Trump's side, and Putin's side? That is very suspicious, even if all they did is keep each other up to date on what they are doing.
