Saudi Arabia calls on world to ban criticism of religion

If your faith needs government support to spread it's ideas, provide for it's protection and fund it's activities, perhaps it doesn't deserve to survive.

Why are you persecuting Christians! OMG stop persecuting Christians! I can't believe how much you are perse... wait. We're talking about Muslims? You tell them! Those stupid savages are wrong about everything as usual! [/christian]

Define "religion": perhaps they are beliefs that happen to have god(s) in them? So what about other beliefs, aren't they equally deserving of respect?

It would be a strange world if criticism of Keynesian economics or String Theory was banned.

I guess our only real hope is either a rash of sanity or that it takes 400 years to thrash out which religions deserve to be so protected.

The society said the act stated digital communications "should not denigrate an individual by reason of his or her colour, race, ethnic or national origins, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability".

One of these things is not like the others; one of these things is not the same. (My bold).

Of the things listed, only 'religion' is a choice. if you make a stupid choice, people should have the right to say so. It is, perhaps, rude to point out that a stupid choice is stupid; but it's not something that should be prohibited.

Religion is optional, and therefore does not belong on that list.

Okay, so i can't denigrate an individual by saying 'You're stupid for being a Christain.'

But how does this mean i can't say, "Christainity is stupid. I mean, look, they promise everlasting life, but their symbol is torture and death."

People deserve respect, but ideas never do. Any idea that is not subjected to the harshest possible criticism is an idea that is not worth having.

When someone asks you to "respect" an idea, they are admitting that they have no good reason to accept it.

Wait, why only 'heavenly' religions? What justifies that distinction?

They mean Islam... and when Islamic people speak about their own religion, they tiptoe very carefully around terminology and references to characters in their story. They talk about Mohamed, but only within about a paragraph of platitudes surrounding the reference, just to be perfectly sure Allah, their allegedly omnipotent god, doesn't misunderstand their intent is to glorify, and not defile. They can't just say, "Islam", they have to say "Islam, the perfect, heavenly, awesomest, wonderful thing, bless us all very much, please, thank you, and good night, farewell, you rock".
