I need to understand the reasoning of rules before I will stoop to following the rules.

You are welcome to do that, but understand or not, rules have to be followed.

I have never met anyone that fits that mold of “follower of science” such that it is part of their identity.

I am a 'follower of science', because science will correct itself when it goes wrong.

Presumably, you identify as a man, an Indian, and (possibly) a Hindu. Is “Follower of Science” right up there with those in your self-identification?

Because that is what I was talking about. You can follow science and that’s a good thing but for that to be some big part of your identity strikes me as odd.

But it is. If not for science, my religion also crashes. I have built it up on science - Advaita (non-dual) Hinduism.

I am not a scientist. I did complete a bachelors in Physics, Maths and Geology (Indian system at that time required one to study three streams, all as majors - 1960). Aimed for Physics or Geology, but Maths destroyed my dreams.

I could have gone into medicine if I had taken Biology at an earlier stage, I was good in that.
But one cannot beat chance, uncertainty and randomness. They rule the world.

EVERY rule can be broken. If you are willing to accept the consequences, if you're caught. Lots of rules are not enforced. Lots of rule breakers don't get caught. Some rules NEED to be broken. I, myself am constantly guilty of blasphemy Screw jehovah. screw jesus. screw alah. Screw mohamad. (and I refuse to capitalize/respect their names.)

But one cannot beat chance, uncertainty and randomness. They rule the world.

Gamblers win often enough to keep the suckers playing.
