The music wasn't my cup of tea but the dance performance were spectacular. They were damn tight.

I haven't followed US football in years, and have no interest in doing so. I saw a bunch of the 'reactions' by the right wing media, so I went and watched the ~15 minutes of the halftime show.

I kept waiting for the part they were outraged about. Nuttin.

So I clicked on some random twitter feed that was one of the louder complainers. She's a writer for the National Review (right wing political rag), and apparently, is totally ok with the pussy grabbing rapist in the white house, but can't abide women dancing on stage in anything less than burkas.

So yeah, all the faux outrage was typical manufactured right wing BS.

I would think that left wing feminists would be fussing about this, more than right wingers, given how they go off on ring girls, swimsuit posters, etc. Basically, anything sexy women do/wear that gives men a boner, as its been explained on this forum.

It seems to me the Superbowl has changed from being a series of commercial adverts with interruptions for a football game (which itself features more adverts) to a series of commercial advertisements with interruptions for a football game (which itself features more adverts) and for a pop/rock concert (which itself features more adverts).

That's my gripe with it, too. I followed the entire NFL season this year which was a lot of fun, but the Superbowl always reminds me of the excesses of American culture. Absolutely no subtlety throughout the day, just non-stop grandiosity.

And yet that isn't happening, b/c the fact is that there are many many times more right wingers wanting to control women' sexuality (pretty much all Republicans) than there are feminists who want to do so.

As far as entertainment quality, I am all for Shakira's hip thrusting and butt shaking (she does it better than J-Lo), and J-Lo's pole acrobatics were impressive for a 50 year old. However, that kind of group choreographed "dancing" (more like Jazzercise) is rather souless IMO. And while they both have some decent songs, the whole song "montage" thing doesn't do it for me. Also, I think there was a lot of lipsyncing. That said, it was far superior than the drek from Maroon 5 last year, mostly b/c they suck ass. Generally I prefer when actual live music were the songs is the focus, like Prince which was arguably the best ever.

I don't normally watch American Football, but I have, in the past, occasionally watched a Superbowl, though it's been a while. This time, I gave up. Lots of reasons, including the incessant interruptions to the actual game.

Yes, it does feel like one is watching American values (by which to a large extent I mean commercialism) on steroids. In many ways it is utterly and completely fascinating.

This year, the live coverage was on the BBC. Even the American commentators were doing showbiz.

By contrast, I watched some of the 6 Nations Rugby Union at the weekend also, and if memory serves, someone was knocked literally unconscious (they don't wear those shiny, homoerotic helmets) and the game didn't even stop for that. I'm not 100% sure if the game was stopped in that particular case, maybe it eventually was, but one regularly sees players on the ground after a hard tackle, sometimes being attended to by medics, and the game continuing (at least until the other players are thundering towards the injured player and the medics).

Exactly. I guess they don't watch football handegg, so it takes them longer to react. But I do recall feminazi outrage over GoDaddy Superbowl commericals back in the day. Also Hardees/Carl Jr. Feminazis hated those too.
