Yipes!

Meanwhile, Liverpool have drawn with 6 pts of Man City, with a game in hand. Even 0-0 at the half, they went down to Norwich City 1-0 until the offense hit their stride. It was a solid win for The Reds, who now have put Man City on notice.

Liverpool and Chelsea played the best 0-0 Cup ET Final ever. And then went about blasting the nets with 19 consecutive PKs, with the "specialist" PK GK (yes, they were down to the goalkeepers) skying his shot over the bar giving Liverpool the Cup. Commentators blew the opportunity to say the first PK was flagged offside. ;)

It seemed completely wrong to take out Mendy. The guy had incredible confidence going in the PK shootout. He played remarkably well. I was personally glad to see him go as his substitute could only be as good as Mendy played, not better. This was Liverpool's first League Cup since beating Championship side Cardiff City in PKs, a result that was more relief in the end than anything close to jubilation. Liverpool are 6 pts behind Man City, with a game in hand. And Liverpool has been playing very well in the Champions League. Both are within reach.

Good news for Poland and WC qualifying. Instead of having to forfeit for refusing to play in a scheduled playoff against Russia, FIFA and UEFA kicked out the Russian national team from the WC and Spartak Moscow from the Europa League competition.

Its seems the Russian owner of Chelsea FC has put the club up for sale. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

Manchester City v Manchester United was paused on Sunday as a supporter required emergency assistance.

Today, the same thing just happened at Anfield on the return end of the Round of 16 in the Champions League. Odd to have that happen. I don't remember play being stopped before due to that.

PSG's collapse to Real Madrid in the Champion's League was hilarious. PSG went into the game with a slender 1-0 lead. Late in the first half, Mbappe scored for PSG, job done you would have thought. But oh no, PSG contrived to throw it away in spectacular fashion. Step up Karim Benzema !

PSG, Poch, Neymar and Messi, over and out !!

World Cup draw.

US appears to get possibly friendly draw. England, US, Iran, Wales/Scotland/Ukraine. I'd be worried if it were Wales, otherwise, top two should be doable... if the team isn't crap. They didn't wow in the Octagonal... which Canada won and was rewarded with Croatia (TBD how good), Belgium, and Morocco.

Group G sucks to be in. Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia, Cameroon. YEACK!!!

Group H not as bad, but Portugal, Uruguay, South Korea, Ghana.

Liverpool faced Man City this past weekend in a clash to see if the outcome would change the top of the table. What resulted was an epic and glorious match up, fit for the two temporary kings of the EPL. The draw, changes nothing up top, and now there is a 7 game gauntlet (with one point between them), among Cups (of which, Liverpool are to face Man City in the FA Cup semis as well).

Man City and Liverpool could face off in the Champions League final as well.

A benefit of pat leave and our toddler being in daycare, I actually have time to check out the Champion's League Semis. I've been watching Villareal this afternoon, and near the end I wondered.. 'has this game really been this one sided'. I couldn't recall Villa having a single, serious press. I looked up the shots and they were 20-1 in favour of Liverpool. Possession 74/26.

The Man City/Real game yesterday was pretty good. Hopefully if we get a Premier League final Liverpool isn't deflated from playing such a weak opponent. And I get a feeling City might be over their hump this year, and realize they need to play to win it.

Villareal looked about as good as Everton did. Felt like Liverpool had 105% possession. Likely 75% of Villareal's possession was the Keeper. Liverpool lucked out with the draw, but still need to finish it off on the road leg of the Semi. Real Madrid and Man City can go either way a bit easier.

Meanwhile, the Europa League (the NIT of European football) is replaying WW2: two teams from the British Isles vs two German teams.

1) But aren't West Ham fans the anti-Semites?
2) Crap... okay, there is England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. Scotland is in... okay... I think the quoted text is right. :D

Insane that Barcelona was in this tournament and aren't in the semi's. But, I suppose that helps with the WWII analogy.

Well, the first leg of WW2 in the Europa League went to Germany with both teams beating the representatives from British Isles.

Today in European Football, the good team beats the less good team to advance to the important game with one of the other good teams.

Looking forward to the game with two good teams tomorrow.

I'll say, L'pool's game was a tale of two games. Liverpool pull off a much better second half via Luis Diaz and march into the final after one of the easier runs into the Champions League final, playing Benfica and Villareal in the quarterfinal and semi-final. Liverpool were nothing short of flat and lacking touch in the first half that was emphatically won by Villareal. But the addition of Luis Diaz and things just changed. Diaz isn't quite as good as Suarez, but he has just as much hunger on the pitch to get the ball. He is tenacious.

The win provide Liverpool a treble of Cup Finals appearances this season, having won their first via the League Cup and await the FA Cup and Champions League Final. If City win out, this would set up a fourth meeting for the season between the two sides. (2 EPL, FA Cup semi, Champions League Final). A treble of cups would help take the sting out of losing out on another EPL title by a point or two.

Meanwhile Man City presumably made it to the final as they had a very comfortable aggregate lead of 5-3 going into the 89th minute.

Wait... getting an update.

If Guardiola wanted a CL title with Man City to cement his legacy, can we finally consider that feat a failure? They have one of the biggest payrolls in Europe and still fail year after year. Eventually they'll win it but 1 / 8 isn't an accomplishment.
