Corporal punishment is legal in Oklahoma schools. But some people think that maybe punishing disabled kids is a step too far, so a bill was introduced to ban it. The bill passed, 31-16.

And here is a bit of the speech of one of the 16 who thinks it is just fine

And I will tell you this, no corporal punishment initiative is not in the interest of children or civilized society. It was popularized back when I was a child by Dr. Benjamin Spock who was not a parent, but he wrote a book about the evils of discipline and corporal punishment. He ran later as for president of the United States as a socialist. This is a top-down socialist-aligned, ideological, unilateral divorce between parents' ability to collaborate with their local schools to establish a disciplined regimen that includes corporal punishment. It is in violation of Scripture and ideologically aligned with socialist ideology that should not be part of this body's legislative initiatives.

According my research, Mr Jett is a veteran of the Navy where he served as an Intelligence Officer. He has 3 daughters.

It's disgusting and immoral to beat any child. I was raised by a Christian father who best us until I stood up to him and he stopped beating me when I was about 7 or 8. Assault of a child is violence that should be condemned not glorified. My sister suffers from emotional damage at least partly due to my father's brutal beatings. Fortunately, she chose not to have children of her own.

I decided I would never hit, or spank my son and he is a cool, calm person who loves his kids and has never hit them. Of course, he's an atheist and a good person, so he knows better than to inflict physical harm on a child. I actually used Dr. Spock's book as a partial guide when raising my son, and while some of Spock's ideas have been debunked, like having an infant sleep on their stomachs, he was right about giving children affection and love and not physically harming them.

Conservative Christians are a huge threat to society these days. They want to take us back to the dark ages or something like that. There is nothing socialist about not beating children. Why do these idiots think it's okay to beat children but it's a major crime to beat an adult? Both are wrong, regardless of what an old book of mythology says.

The people who support corporal punishment typically went through it as children, and they say it was why they know how to show respect for rules. When asked if they were beaten, they'd usually say 'quite a bit'. Making me wonder, if it actually worked at all.

As a parent of an ADHD child, I can say quite authoritatively, it didn't matter how my daughter was punished (never positive punishment, but plenty of positive reward / negative reward). She did what she did. She needed to be managed differently. That took time to suss out. And now she is in a system that understands her needs a lot better, her emotional behavior is better as well.

We can't let children get away with not following discipline, but some people seem to get really hard on the idea of hurting children, and not about how to reach the children. These sorts of people should be kept as far away from children and developing policy for children as possible.

I bet our resident, super reasonable conservative atheists will have a problem with this. 🤔

Probably not. But we must be nice and respect those who hold vile opinions.

In the Republicans' defense, their god murdered people for misbehaving. So on a spectrum of 1 to a Flood Holocaust, they are much closer to 1.:D

Presumably, if corporal punishment is ok, then not punishing disabled kids is unfair discrimination. Good on them, saviors of equality!!

To be fair, I thought all Republicans in OK defend corporal punishment. So I guess only some is a step in the right direction.
