Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, which was first published on November 24, 1859, presented Christianity with an existential challenge. Here was an explanation of the existence and diversity of life that did not require Divine intervention. Some Christians made an uneasy peace with Darwinian evolution. Some left the faith. Some refused to believe in evolution, despite the growing abundance of scientific evidence in favor of it.

Research into the human genome presents racial egalitarians with the same challenge. Prior to the Second World War it was commonly acknowledged that there were intrinsic differences between the races in average ability levels and behavior.

Even Bertrand Russel wrote, "In extreme cases, there can be little doubt of the superiority of one race to another. North America, Australia and New Zealand certainly contribute more to the civilisation of the world than they would do if they were still peopled by aborigines. It seems on the whole fair to regard Negroes as on the average inferior to white men."

Charles Darwin wrote, "“At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races."

After World War II no new scientific evidence was presented to indicate that the races were genetically equivalent in average intelligence. Nevertheless, the Holocaust and other evidence of Nazi uses of racial theories caused most people in the West to want to disbelieve that racial differences were important, or that they even existed.

The fact that American Negroes contributed loyally to the war effort increased the disinclination to believe that their race was intrinsically inferior.

In 1944 An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy, by Gunnar Myrdal was published. This acknowledged that blacks tended to perform less well intellectually than whites, and that they had higher rates of crime and illegitimacy. Dr. Myrdal attributed these characteristics to racial discrimination. He claimed that if racial discrimination came to an end blacks would begin to perform and behave as well as whites.

Fifty one years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed it has to be acknowledged that this has not happened. Black rates of crime and illegitimacy have increased. Black academic performance has hardly improved at all. The fact that No Child Left Behind has left most black children behind gives fresh credence to assertions by Charles Murray, and others of like mind.

As more is learned about genetics it is becoming increasingly apparent that qualities liberals wish could be improved by liberal reform are caused by genes.

Unfortunately, liberal creationists are responding the same way Christian creationists have responded to Darwin. They abandon science, and try to punish those who challenge what they wish was true.

Trondon may lack tact in presenting his observations, but the notion that natural (or intentional) selection can change animal behavior is hardly a new revelation. Dogs v Wolves are an easy example. Belyaev's silver foxes could be domesticated within 10 generations. Humans are animals, too. (These seems to be forgotten.) 40.7 is still less than the out-of-wedlock birthrate for the post-revolution non-slave population of the United States. So this is victory for freedom!

Can this leftward shift be explained by the high execution rate between 1500 and 1750? During that period, 0.5 to 1% of all men were removed from each generation through court - ordered executions and a comparable proportion through extrajudicial executions, i.e., deaths of offenders at the scene of the crime or in prison while awaiting trial. The total execution rate was thus somewhere between 1 and 2%. These men were permanently removed from the population, as was the heritable component of their propensity for homicide.

I cannot figure out how anything else is different in 1973 that is different today. You guys nailed it.

One thing that has certainly increased since 1973 has been the growing income gap. Although I do not celebrate that gap it cannot be said that it has lead to an increase in the crime rate since 1980, and the violent crime rate since 1991. Indeed, the welfare system has been scaled back. As poverty has become more severe, the crime rate has become less severe, because punishment has become more severe.

POVERTY AND CRIME

The notion that economic deprivation necessarily leads to lawlessness is widely believed but is not supported by empirical evidence. Human history is replete with examples of impoverished people—of all racial and ethnic backgrounds—who have endured extreme poverty without descending into criminal activity. During the 1960s, for instance, the residents of San Francisco's Chinatown were among America's poorest people—with the most unemployment, the worst housing conditions, the least education, and the highest rate of tuberculosis in their city. Yet despite such hardships, only five people of Chinese ancestry went to jail in the entire state of California in 1965.[1]

Similarly, Jewish immigrants to America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries also repudiated criminality despite having to face extreme economic deprivation. Historian Max Dimont describes them:

"The majority of these immigrants had arrived penniless, all their worldly belongings wrapped in a bundle.... Most of [them] arrived in New York. Some made their way into other cities,... but the majority remained in New York, settling in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, [which was] a neighborhood of the poor. Sociologists, with their impressive charts showing the number of toilets (or lack of the), the number of people per room, the low per capita income, paint a dismal picture of the Lower East Side Jewish slum. But their charts do not capture its uniqueness. Though it bred tuberculosis and rheumatism, it did not breed crime and venereal disease. It did not spawn illiteracy, illegitimate children, or deserted wives. Library cards were in constant use."[2]

The late political scientist James Q. Wilson debunked the theory that crime results from poverty, or that redistributive government programs can reduce crime rates by alleviating poverty, by pointing out that “crime rose the fastest in this country at a time when the number of persons living in poverty or squalor was declining.” He added: “I have yet to see a ‘root cause’ or to encounter a government program that has successfully attacked it.”

In modern America, the correlation between high crime rates and poverty has a great deal to do with the proliferation of single-parent, father-absent households. According to the U.S Census, in 2008 the poverty rate for single parents with children was 35.6%; the rate for married couples with children was 6.4%. For white families in particular, the corresponding two-parent and single-parent poverty rates were 21.7% and 3.1%, respectively. For Hispanics, the figures were 37.5% and 12.8%, and for blacks, 35.3% and 6.9%. According to Robert Rector, a senior research fellow with the Heritage Foundation, “the absence of marriage increases the frequency of child poverty 700 percent” and thus constitutes the single most reliable predictor of a self-perpetuating underclass.

Children in single-parent households are burdened not only with profound economic disadvantages, but are also far likelier to eventually get into trouble with the law. As a Heritage Foundation analysis notes, youngsters raised by single parents, as compared to those who grow up in intact married homes, are much more likely to be physically abused; to be treated for emotional and behavioral disorders; to smoke, drink, and use drugs; to behave aggressively and violently; to engage in criminal activity; and to be arrested for a juvenile crime. According to the National Fatherhood Initiative, 60% of rapists, 72% of adolescent murderers, and 70% of long-term prison inmates are men who grew up in fatherless homes.
