The hush money indictment

What a relief.

Live updates: Donald Trump hush money trial verdict

A nice quick verdict.

Trump stared straight ahead for most of this part of the trial.

Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche moved for an acquittal on the ground that Michael Cohen committed perjury in this trial. Judge Merchan denied that motion.

Judge Merchan announced a sentencing hearing on July 11 at 10 am ET.

When he left the courtroom, Donald Trump denounced the "rigged trial" as a "disgrace".

Even before jury selection began weeks ago, former President Donald Trump’s legal team was preparing their strategy for appeal, according to CNN’s chief legal affairs correspondent Paula Reid.
What might they argue?
Trump’s legal team is likely going to make the argument that their client would have never been able to get a fair trial in Manhattan.
Seems like they will try to appeal the verdict all the way to the US Supreme Court, in the hope that Trump's handpicked Justices will exonerate him.

More Trump: “We’ll keep fighting, we’ll fight til the end and we’ll win because our country’s gone to hell.” and “we don’t have the same country anymore, we have a divided mess.”

“We will fight for our Constitution. This is long from over.”

“Our whole country is being rigged right now.” and “This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson called this day “a shameful day in American history.” He said that the justice system is being weaponized against Trump and that this trial is “a purely political exercise, not a legal one.”

The American people see this as lawfare, and they know it is wrong—and dangerous. President Trump will rightfully appeal this absurd verdict—and he WILL WIN!”

Trump will appeal, which will be on-going a long time. Then, he will beat Biden for President. Next, he will claim immunity until he leaves office. He'll die in office or be very dementia-ridden before his 4 year Presidency is over.

That's the nightmare scenario. A pleasant dream would be that a lot of voters who might otherwise have voted to reelect him will either abstain or vote against the convicted felon. MAGA media is spinning this for all they are worth, but this is going to be a serious drag on Trump's campaign, and the other legal dramas are still playing out. It'll be interesting to see if Trump's poll numbers hold.

so, he’s accusing the entire jury of being politically motivated?

Rep. Elise Stefanik: the verdict “shows how corrupt and rigged the American system has become under Joe Biden.”
“From the start, the scales of justice were stacked against President Trump. We must redouble our efforts and work around the clock to ensure President Trump is victorious this November to save America from Biden’s failed Far Left Democrat agenda.”

Rep. Steve Scalise: “Corrupt, partisan, vicious.” and “I won’t stand by while the leader of our party is ambushed by our own government.”

TX Gov. Greg Abbott: on Xwitter, the trial is a "sham"

Michael Cohen: “today is an important day for accountability and the rule of law.” and “While it has been a difficult journey for me and my family, the truth always matters. I want to thank my attorneys Danya Perry and Joshua Kolb for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this process.”

His lawyer Danya Perry: “He definitely wanted to see accountability for his former boss and mentor, and someone who meant so much to him for so long. But for those same reasons, his emotions are tinged with sadness as well.”

RFK Jr.: the case is “being used to divide us.”
Me: That's baffling. That's the sort of thing that a Trumpie would say.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg, about the jury, "their service is literally the cornerstone of our judicial system" and the “careful attention” the jurors “paid to the evidence and the law.”
The prosecution team was "phenomenal”, "embodying the finest traditions of this office: Professionalism, integrity, dedication and service.” “They are model public servants and I am proud and humbled to serve side by side with them.”
But he would not discuss what sentencing he wanted for Trump.

Former MD Gov and current R Sen cand in MD Larry Hogan: Americans must “respect the verdict and the legal process” and that “At this dangerously divided moment in our history, all leaders—regardless of party—must not pour fuel on the fire with more toxic partisanship.”
Trump senior adviser Chris LaCivita in Xwitter: “You just ended your campaign.”

"Stormy Daniels is still processing Trump's conviction surrounding hush money payment, her husband says"
Barrett Blade: “It’s a big weight off her shoulders at this point."

Mitch McConnell has yet to comment.

Michael Cohen appeared on Rachel Maddow's MSNBC show, and said that he was “relieved” but not surprised. “This has been six years in the making.”
Cohen called Todd Blanche, Trump’s attorney, a “SLOAT” – stupidest lawyer of all time. During his closing arguments, Blanche had called Cohen a “GLOAT” – the greatest liar of all time.

Scary to think that these people would throw away the foundations of our society for that scumbag of a man.

What part was corrupt? The jury was corrupt? That really is the message they want to spread?

"Donald Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche repeated the claim that the former president faced an unfair trial, arguing that Manhattan is an unfavorable jurisdiction."

"McConnell says he expects Trump's conviction to be overturned"

Todd Blanche:
He wanted to get his story out. I think the judge had made some decisions before the trial, the day the trial started, about what would be allowed to be asked of him by the prosecutors if he took the stand and some of those questions were really complicated to answer because they’re still appeals going on ... ultimately it’s his decision and he listened to us and relied on our counsel, and he reached the decision that he thought was right, which I very much agreed with.
Seems like "We were afraid of what would happen if he testified, and we talked him about of it." Donald Trump is no Adolf Hitler. When AH was tried for the Beer Hall Putsch, the judges let him ramble at length about how he was a great German patriot who only wanted to make Germany great again, and how the real traitors are Germany's current rulers.

That's just what happens when you back someone guilty AF.

And now, where is Trump's official residence? If officially, Florida, Trump cannot vote. Not until, he has been sentenced and served his sentence. Florida also bars felons from holding realtor licenses. Could get messy. Sentencing is due to take place on July 11.

Tucker Carlson, on X:

Import the Third World, become the Third World. That's what we just saw. This won't stop Trump. He'll win the election if he's not killed first.
But it does mark the end of the fairest justice system in the world.
Anyone who defends this verdict is a danger to you and your family.

So that's how the Trumpists are gonna spin this, as an incitement for civil war.
I agree with the Montana fishing shop guy when it comes to Tucker.

12 jurors of his peers under heavy threat of reprisal would disagree that it is political theater.

I’m sure they has as much evidence of the jury being rigged as they do for the last election.
