"The Only Thing That Stops a Bad Guy With a Gun" Narrative Falls Apart in Uvalde

Texas now has next to no laws on carrying guns. So any moron can carry his gun with no license, and wandering loose. Cops can't stop anybody from this. Including young thugs. So doofus with gun is now a target for thug posses. Surround a Gomer, all pull guns and demand Goober's wallet, phone, car keys and gun. More morons looking to be a good guy with a gun. Looking for an excuse to shoot someone. And drunks with guns. A shooting outside a bar turning into Shoot Out At The OK Corral.

Road rage incidents with gun play has shot up (no pun intended) astronomically.

Take a quick glance outside the USA for a minute. There's just such a utopia immediately to your north.

People don't have the right to double down on their stupid; It just makes things worse.
Sure it's all that different for the average person?

Yes, America has more murders--but the vast majority of them are criminals killing criminals and of little relevance if you're not a criminal.

Self defense shootings exceed mass shootings, if mass shootings were the only downside to guns it would be clear we should permit them.

For Texas, whose government believes in the 'good guy with gun' narrative, yes it is embarrassing.
Ya know, there are plenty of examples of armed citizens stopping bad guys. That there were cowards in Uvalde doesn’t change that.

What if neither of them had guns?
Knife beats empty hands. Guns are an equalizer, other portable weapons greatly favor the thug.

Texas, competing for Florida for the #1 spot on stupidest state.

While I support gun rights I feel it should be treated like cars--you show you know the law and how to operate them to get a license. (Yeah, concealed carry permits normally come with training requirements rather than test requirements. Tolerable, but I don't like the government dictating how you learn, just that you learn.)

No, society and an easy camera are an equalizer.

Nothing, not a knife, not a gun, not even a small private army beats "can call the police and declare the evidence against you effectively and immediately".

Nothing beats "the government of the society", except maybe a criminal enterprise, and only that when the government lets itself be weak. We are legion as a society, and we expect cops to do downright suicidal things, because it's the right thing to do sometimes, even if it kills a set of folks that may include "ourselves".

Guns are not an equalizer, effective, immediate evidence gathering mechanisms are an equalizer.

I could design a fucking popgun more inevitable as a doom than a firearm. It would not need to injure folks in the short term at all, the doom being enforcement of consequences, "to go away or learn be better", and a trail of breadcrumbs wee wee wee all the way back home.

I think it's a better invention of a gun that shoots whole police or even public opinion at folks instead of bullets. You can do that with a cell phone in a pinch in most situations but having something more purpose built and persistent like a drone with camera and a taggant cannon would be better. And the nice thing is that things like that can be made really fucking cheap.

I would prefer the government dictate that you learn based on at least one default "how", or at least be expected to try, before even the right of passage or coming of age upon which pivots the legal right to own such a weapon.

We do as much for sex, informing people of it before puberty happens, or near the start of it, so that everyone has at least some education even before it makes a difference.

Thanks to the efforts of the NRA and similar groups and The GOP, we now live under there tyrannny of well armed thugs. Robbers, carjackers, and well armed gang members. Thank you NRA and GOP.

So the guy is sitting outside the party with his knife or his gun. At this point, which one is more dangerous?

Yesterday's lesson. You can't seek to defund the police but you can seek small government.

Hypocrisy in action. I want to buy some grenades and launchers, machine guns, a couple mortars, claymores, stingers and tanks. Unfortunately Texas has denied me the ability to adequately defend myself. Hypocrites all.

Something most "guns for all" advocates miss is that some bad guys are former good guys.

Well, all bad guys are formerly guys and some bad guys are formerly good guys, and all good guys may become bad guys, no matter how good they convince they may tell themselves that they are. The best solution to such problems seems to be seeing to it that nobody ever has that much power, and that we all expect folks to recognize their capacity to be bad.

When we do that, though, we come to the conclusion that we should seek to disarm and educate, and that serial escalation should be on the front end, to generate a gulf that doggedly follows on the heels of apologetics to unilateral or excessive violence so that interests to that end are effectively thwarted.

That's abject nonsense.

Any weapon favours the person who is most ready and willing to use it.

If a mugger steps from the shadows and puts a gun to your face, your holstered gun doesn't help you one iota.

If he is prepared to actually use lethal force, nothing you can do will "equalise" that situation. Guns just make the first person to resort to violence the most likely winner in a conflict.

That swings the balance away from 'equal', because if the weapons are bare hands, there's always a higher prior probability that the initiator of violence will be the loser.
