The real problem in America today remains Christian fascism. As Sinclair Lewis remarked, when Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross of Christ. Well, I give you exhibit A.

In all the talk and condemnation of what happened last week, few, if any, are talking about the role religious faith played in the assault on democracy. I earlier wrote a screed against religion in the general religion forum. It sucks. Indeed it does. But I would like to hear from our leaders about this connection. Their silence is just appalling. Christianity, especially of the evangelical kind, is an evil upon our land. It is based, like Trump’s claims of voter fraud, on a basic lie. If you believe that 2,000 years ago a man rose from the dead to save us all, and then just disappeared, well, you’ll certainly believe Donald Trump.

LOL, religious nutters are the least of my worries. It doesn't appear to be them cheering on the authoritarians.

The Evangelical vote went heavily for Trump this past election, around 78%. The same is not true for all variants of Christianity. Catholics, for instance, flipped; a slim majority voted for Trump in 2016, but the majority went to Biden in 2020, a 5 point shift. If you want to hear from Christian leaders, your best bet would be from hierarchical traditions like the Roman Catholic church or the Greek Orthodox Church. But that is where Trump's support is weakest. Indeed, the current Pope Francis has spoken very blisteringly of Trumpism, and refuses to acknowledge his Christianity at all, an unusual move for a Pope who generally favors ecumenism to the point of fault. Evangelicals don't really have formal leaders beyond the level of a local pastor, usually, so there isn't anyone who can even claim to speak for them all. Unless it is Trump himself.

So, you're going to just ignore the fact that evangelicals were politicking from the pulpits in 2016 for tRump? That it is literally called the Religious Right? That the republicans run on anti-abortion based on "religious" grounds (recognizing of course that this is not actually biblical). Religion isn't "cheering on" the authoritarians, religion is the basis of authoritarian thought in general.

I would think the opposite. Christianity has shaped the Western world so thoroughly that even those who do not openly adhere to it still follow it. Jesus was a poor criminal executed in worst way. Yet, he became God. Concern for the meek and disadvantaged is a Western ideal because it is a Christian one. Historically, appeals for human rights have been based on it. Wilberforce was an evangelical Christian. I may be an atheist, but the notion that Christianity is the problem seems quite wrong.

The problem is desperate fear-driven unthinking people feeling the need for their savior. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors and ideologies. The vast majority of self-professed Christians in the US did not attend that riot.

Decades of right wing leaders and broadcasters telling their audience that the news is fake has led to a substantial electorate that has no hold on reality. We now have Congresspeople who are proud believers in Q-Anon. Sheer lunacy.
Trump's lies about election fraud would not have taken hold without this larger phenomenon, which he has spent his political life exploiting.

LOL, conservatives downplaying everything as usual.

Baseball star Curt Schilling has claimed his insurance policy has been canceled by AIG after the Donald Trump fan tweeted in support of the Capitol rioters. The Red Sox legend tweeted: 'We will be just fine, but wanted to let Americans know that @AIGinsurance canceled our insurance due to my 'Social Media profile'.'

Christians are the problem.

That does nothing to prove OP's argument wrong. LOL.

And it indicates a different source of the problem.

What, we can only have one problem?
That would certainly make crisis management simpler.

The real problem is Christianity religion. Christianity is simply the most powerful flavor locally.

It's deeper than just religion. Religion is basically a delusion. Being delusional is the fundamental disorder.

I agree with that.
Right now, the most powerful factor in American disunity is The Big Lie.

Self-interested Republican politicians are still promulgating The Big Lie to curry favor with Trump and delusional trumpsucking voters. Those politicians are currently the main vectors of discord in the USA.
If they were to come out in unison and announce that Biden won fair and square, Trump lost and there was no massive voter fraud, things would instantly cool off significantly.

Religion in the public square is nothing new. And atheists don't want to get rid of religion, they want to replace it with their own religion.

Take a number and get in line.
