The Virus - Are You Affected?

I work retail.State has the 6 foot rule for all stores. Most people were real good about it.And,we have lots of tp.

So tomorrow is my wife's last day at work for the foreseeable future. She's business office manager and bookkeeper for a local dollar store chain, not one of the big chains, only four stores, and their main business is mostly crafts and party supplies. When the state closed up, the traffic dropped to almost nothing except at the store in Mt. Pleasant. That one's staying open.

Can you send me some?

Massachusetts just added the social distancing marker rule for checkout lines, among other things.

Our local grocery was already doing a lot of this before today. The grocery is also installing plexiglass barriers between the customers and the checkout clerk. Good idea.

An update from San Diego;
My house is basically hunkered down. We can go easily w2 weeks without leaving home right now: did an extra Costco trip on Sunday, stocked up with an extra box of frozen pizza, some tomatoes, a bag of rice for one of my wife’s friends. Rice is something of an essential in my house, being married to a Korean.
Going to hop a 4 cases of beer in fermentation tomorrow and bottle a case of mead. With several bottles of whiskey being delivered by my brewing partner for his part in the last 2 brews, I am well stocked on that front as well.
Still have no firm answer on school resuming April 6. Those of us that are paying attention can see what is coming and some form of distance learning is how we will finish out the school year. Some of us are planning ahead, some are insisting on doing no work on their vacation. It will be an interesting start to the last quarter of the year.

All military bases in the US are closed to non-critical personnel. I can't go to work even if I want to now.

I'm one of the lucky ones though and can work from home. I've been working from home since last tuesday (Mar 17).

Italy wealthy? Compared to what? Certainly not some other EU countries. Remember the PIIGS?

Compared to countries in general. Italy is a wealthy country with an advanced economy, a high standard of living, and an excellent health service. If they can be overwhelmed, anybody can.

Well we have the highest population out of all these countries.

What's your excuse going to be when your numbers soar past China's?

China numbers to be updated but you're about there.

How will it feel to be #1?

And whilst Italy is only second to China in terms of confirmed cases, the USA are moving up the rankings: you overtook France and South Korea today. You may get to number one yet,.
Well we have the highest population out of all these countries.

So when do you reckon the number of US confirmed cases will be double those of China?

Tuesday?

Or do you think you'll manage it by end of play Monday?

I support grocery stores putting limits on items to fight hoarding but 2 gallons of milk per trip with me' my wife and 3 teenagers means we have to go to the grocery every day and risk exposure. I wish i could show my insurance card that lists the 5 of us so that i could at least get enough milk to last 2 days.

In the meantime, a resident at my mom's assisted living went to the hospital for a different reason but while there was tested positive for C19.

Oh no. :(. I hope you mom stays healthy. When I hear of cases at assisted living I worry for them!

I'm in Clearwater, FL. I watched with disdain as these youngins partied it up at Clearwater beach and voting still took place despite a pandemic going on. I predicted at the time that this would not bode well for the future, and unfortunately I've been quite right. I was following the coronavirus thing pretty early, and my household is going on 3 weeks of social isolation. My son and daughter did finish out the week in school, before spring break, and my partner and I had discussed keeping the kids home if something wasn't called by the time they were due back form their break. While the school is still showing going back into session after the break, I myself am prepared for them to finish they school year at home. The school has started online education, and Spectrum here is giving people 60 free days of Internet, so I have them coming in a few days to hook us up with broadband. Currently we tether through our mobile phones for internet access.

I lost my job a few weeks before all this happened, due to my boss not bringing in the business he was hoping to bring in as he tried to expand his IT company, and failing. I was not at all expecting this as I did a great job, but now it seems he's struggling with our new conditions, and so perhaps everyone else there will be out of job too. I liked my job, but hated my boss. He was brilliant in some ways, but almost pathological in others. A Trump supporting, gun fetishizing braggard. Although this put me in a hell of a bind in the end I'm glad I'm gone, as I didn't realize the stress from working there was getting to me. Hired, promoted and then fired all within a year. A real roller coaster ride. In a way I'm thankful it happened, I'm here for the family since there is now no day care or school for the kids to attend.

Things here in Clearwater quieted down a bit, but things here almost seem back to normal, unless you're paying close attention. There's still quite a bit of traffic about, most businesses are still open, and I see few people taking precautions from infection. Our great governor, Ron DeSantis refuses to close the state at Trump's request, but our county has given us a shelter in place order. You wouldn't know it by looking around, but I suspect that's about to change very soon as the shit is just now beginning to hit the fan. My current tracker shows over a hundred people infected in my county and growing, this was in the 30's 2 days ago.

My partner works a a medical supply store (Scrubs N' Stuff) that sells scrubs and other clothing items to medical personnel, and so far they are under the impression they will be deemed essential. My partner is currently taking vacation time while she decides if she wishes to go back or not, and is having a very hard time making that decision. I support whatever she decides, but my advice is not to go back to work, as such a place is a magnet for the virus in my opinion. Things are quite tight, but the timing in a way was good, this happened during tax refund time for us, so we were able to well stock the house with essentials and food. We're safe for now and in a holding pattern, just like many Americans.

You went on a cruise.

Indeed, I did, and I am very happy that I did. There were so few people on the cruise, that the chances of infection were very small. In fact, nobody got ill during that cruise, and we got a chance to see what conditions were like in Singapore and Vietnam, which were much more advanced than the US in taking precautions. We were checked at every port by locals in full protective gear. And the ship itself took extraordinary precautions to keep people healthy.

The problems started when we got to the US, and United had cancelled other flights from San Francisco to Seattle. What they did was pack everyone into our aircraft, so all seats were full on that flight. My wife did pick up a fairly light cold, and I think it was from that flight, where it was impossible to maintain distance from other people on the plane or in the airports. Now that I am back in Seattle, the situation is much scarier than either Vietnam or Singapore. Our chances of infection here are far greater than they were in either of those places or on the ship. Also, bear in mind that we paid in full for that cruise and airfares before the full scope of the epidemic was clear, so we thought that our greatest risk would be in Asia. Only during the cruise did we really understand how bad things were going to get. We saw the emptied tourist sites and streets during our visits. That kind of thing only really started to happen in the US after we got back.

We haven't gone shopping since we settled in but we're going to have to go pretty soon. 2 gallons of milk isn't enough for us, either--when her favorite stuff is at a good price I've been known to come home with 4 gallons.
