As in the other threads whose responses to your post you ignored, I would like to point out that critical race theory does not, in fact, encourage white people to pretend to be black, or universities to pretend to have black students, or indeed mandate that anyone ought to pretend they are something they are not. Could you use critical race theory as an analytical set to better understand why situations like this develop? Absolutely. Racial identity does not occur in a vacuum, systemic analysis is always relevant. But becoming more conscious of American race dynamics would actually make this kind of situation less likely, by making students much more self-aware of their own upbringing and expectations, and suspicious of public figures who make unlikely claims about their heritage. If anything, this is an indication that we probably should be teaching American college students social theories of race, not shielding them from any and all research into the subject in the name of "patriotism". Many of the most infamous "Pretendians" and others who have assumed racial identities they were not socialized to began their careers well before Critical Race Theory even existed. Thomas King did not read Derrick Bell and think "I must assume a false identity immediately". In fact, his mother raised him to believe something untrue about himself twenty years before the first of Bell's major publications. Sasheen Littlefeather was born around the same time. This is not a recent phenomenon by any means.
