That's not really a just russian word, and none of the pogroms happened in Russia, jews were not allowed to move to Russia
Russian Empire got a chunk of Polish Empire along with their jews , ordinary folk (ukrainian, belarussian, litvinian, etc) and pogroms. There were no jews in Russia before that.
