Those bad things some Muslims do? It is about Islam, not whatever your mind reading tells you

It's what is in the Quran that's a problem. That not many Muslims actually practice what they are told to do in their holy book is a credit to them. It is the Quran that needs a reformation, expunging the verses that not only encourage violence toward non believers, but order it.

One could say the same about the Bible, especially the old Testament. It's a credit to Jews that they don't actually practice most of what they're told to do in their holy book. In fact, most people I've met don't practice most of what's in their holy books, in fact, most don't even know what's in their holy books. Being of a certain religion is not simply following what a book says. The book is usually secondary to their actual behaviors, even if it's given lip service as the basis for their religion.

Peculiar, that I have read and studied the Tanakh and New Testament infinitely more as an atheist that I did as a Christian... well as long as I was actually one. Ended that stuff pretty early in life.

True, but Christianity is a reformation of the vindictive, nasty nature of the OT God, given a bit of spit and polish and emerged nearly squeaky clean. Just a bit of baggage left over, bad enough as that is. But Islam has had no such reformation, the words of the Prophet have not been ameliorated to a more inclusive doctrine of tolerance and 'turn the other cheek' or the golden rule.

Fair enough, but Christians always seem to be quoting the OT more than Jesus.

Judaism has had no such reformation either, as you point out in your first sentence. Having a nasty god in your holy books doesn't necessarily mean that the people who read those holy books have to be nasty. There are almost as many interpretations of the holy books as there are people. I believe that people get their values culturally, and then use those parts of the holy book to bolster their values. This is why the religions can look so different from culture to culture, despite the source material being identical.

It's fortunate that most believers don't take the words of the prophets and their holy books literally, even it was originally meant to be literal. Instead choosing what is moderate, what is attractive, the culture, fellowship, what their religion promises them...and ignore the rest. Or not even aware that there is bad stuff in their holy books..

Yeah, all the while cherry picking as they go.
