Florida's state senate, ladies and gentlemen.

It’s not the weapon. It’s the evil from within.

And unfortunately, Senator Stewart said at the very beginning of her debate, when we say “thoughts and prayers,” it’s frowned upon. And I take real offense at that because thoughts and prayers are really the only thing that’s gonna stop the evil from within the individual who is taking up their arms to do this kind of a massacre.

Keep in mind, that this is the same woman who said this:

In states where beer is unregulated, the per capita production is significantly higher. Higher beer production and higher consumption go hand-in-hand. As a social conservative, this is why I believe we need to keep regulations on alcoholic beverages in place and not have unregulated beer widely available in the marketplace.

I honestly just don't get it.

Think of it this way: She's nuts. It all becomes clear after that.

follow the money and it will become more clear. What does the NRA spend to lobby against regulation? What does Clair Rose spend to lobby against regulation?

Not that I know anything about this Florida fruitcake...but I really doubt this is primarily about money. Conservative Christianity (fundagelicals) bakes up in many strange ways. A large portion of fundagelicals are now quite fond of authoritarian notions and love of militarism. And this tends to play out with a fixation on having guns and the rights to have guns.

At the same time, the many of fundagelicals think that people's morals need to controlled, even though they espouse the value of economic freedom. This plays out in several variations regarding alcohol, other drugs, gambling and prostitution. There is still a significant segment that see alcohol as borderline evil (yeah, makes no sense from their Bible but when has that stopped them), so it needs to be regulated. If alcohol didn't have so much public support, I'm sure more would be all in favor of restarting the failed prohibition. These same people are usually the same ones who strongly back the War on Drugs and maintaining the illegality of drug usage.

This not caring about all the carnage caused in significant part by their luv of guns, and wanting to control peoples potential self harm via alcohol, isn't much different than how they think about babies. The fetus' in the womb is in need of extreme protection; and then fucking who cares about the babies environment once they are born.

There's not much to get. Conservative Christians are masters at special pleading fallacies.

You forgot to specify white people. They want white people to have the right to have guns and carry them in public.

People of lesser races with guns can and should be shot on sight by the police in their opinion.

Oh, and I also forgot to mention that the sun will be rising from the East tomorrow morning....

Guns are designed to harm other people, while alcohol is designed to give oneself pleasure. Abrahamic religion is all in favor of harming others and highly against pleasure. Anything that makes this life terrible is good business for those selling an afterlife.

He left out one thing. It's thoughts and prayers and magic underwear. You need all three to stop gun violence.

Stargel said she aims to craft a detailed gun control plan that would include tighter background checks, raising the minimum age from 18 to 21 and implementing mental health checks. But the most effective measure, Stargel says? “Thoughts and prayers. In my opinion, the one thing that will actually change this the most, is the one thing that has become fighting words, which is to say ‘thoughts and prayers.’ So that’s something I’m gonna continue to add to my comprehensive plan, that we can hopefully stop the evil that is happening from within our world.”

Religious nuts think people like Cruz are "evil" rather than mentally fucked up in the head and a few prayers ought to straighten them out provided the deity deems fit to do so. Bonkers. Same approach to praying the gay away I suppose. Bonkers, the lot of them.

What don't you get? I ask honestly. It makes sense to me. What I mean by that is that I comprehend what is being said.

Agreed that they're bonkers... should they be allowed to have guns?

Beero just sees a slight discontinuity in arguing against gun legislation, because the problem is entirely within the heart of the shooter, not the availability of guns, but we need alcohol legislation exactly because the problem is the availability of alcohol, not the person drinking it.

One would think a consistent message would be EITHER it's in the heart/mind/soul of the sinner, in both cases,
OR
it's in society's control of the tools by which they achieve sinniness.

Oh. That. Thx.

If thoughts and prayers will protect us from massacres, why not something simple like unregulated beer?

I understand the question now. Keith explained it.

Cuz even with an AR-15 strapped to you side, you can still pray straight...

But once you start squeezing the juice, praying can start going haywire...

The NRA doesn't actually spend very much on lobbying. What's going on is that politicians listen to their lobbyists because those lobbyists have so many votes behind them.

You're cheating. You hit the bullseye so accurately that you couldn't have done it unaided!
