Trump VS COVID-19 Threat

So, Dow Futures down 1200 after Trump’s triumphant attempt to show empathy. The economics of this pandemic are definitely real. People are losing their jobs or their jobs have become incredibly harder with schools shutting down.

Then there is the tiny matter of the near lack of reasonable response from the White House, in fact stepping in the way of the CDC, after having cutting critical pandemic response programs.

Generally, the best Presidents are known for their responses to situations that weren’t under their control. And the lesser regarded are known for the same thing, just more ineffectual with the responses. And Trump will be remembered as the President that was responsible for making it worse, when we knew how to make it better.

We need to deal with the complications of quarantines, temporary economic shutdowns, and helping the medical teams be able to test people to prevent the needless spreading of this virus. Not fucking tax cuts and a travel ban to Europe*.

By that criterion at least, two of the best Presidents were Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Both Presidents had big crises that were not under their control, and they rose up to those challenges, with the Civil War and the New Deal and World War II.

Their predecessors, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and Herbert Hoover had totally ineffectual responses to impending secession and the Great Depression.

Likewise, Jimmy Carter was brought down by his ineffectual response to the Iran hostage crisis.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez swipes at Republicans who 'stalk my livestreams' - AOL News
... She was likely responding to criticism she garnered from some conservatives after saying in a broadcast Tuesday that people weren’t visiting Asian and Chinese restaurants in the U.S. “because of just straight-up racism” around the coronavirus, that originated in China.

“Honestly, it sounds almost so silly to say, but there’s a lot of restaurants that are feeling the pain of racism,” she said. The segment was later amplified by a reporter for the right-wing website, The Daily Wire.

A lot of right-wingers jumped up and down on AOC because of that. But this has happened: New York Mayor Urges Support For Chinatowns Amid Racist Coronavirus Fears | HuffPost
Business owners in the city’s three major Chinatowns — Flushing in Queens, Chinatown on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and Sunset Park in Brooklyn — have experienced as much as a 40% drop in business in the weeks since the virus began to spread, according to city officials.

...
Yet fears and misinformation about the outbreak have spread, often involving racist tropes about Chinese people as eaters of “weird” food and as filthy disease carriers. These xenophobic attacks have persisted since the 19th century, when Chinese immigrants to the U.S. were labeled as harbingers of the “yellow peril.”

In recent weeks, Chinese-owned businesses, especially restaurants, have reported precipitous declines in sales and patronage across the country — including in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu — and worldwide, such as in London and Paris.

'Disturbing In So Many Ways': Conservatives Pan Trump's Coronavirus Speech | HuffPost
President Donald Trump’s speech about the steps he’s taking to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus received low marks on social media ― and not just from the left. Many conservatives also denounced the speech as a disaster.

On Wednesday, Trump announced a ban on noncitizens arriving from Europe, called the disease a “foreign virus” and praised himself for “early, intense action” against the infection, despite a series of missteps by his administration, including a lack of testing.

Trump also misspoke several times. He announced a ban on not just people from Europe, but goods, which was incorrect. He also said insurance companies would pay for coronavirus treatment, but an industry spokesperson told Politico the waived fees only apply to tests, not treatment.

Senate GOP Blocks Emergency Paid Sick Leave Bill From Moving Forward | HuffPost
“For many of our workers ― restaurant workers, truck drivers, service industry workers ― they may not have an option to take a day off without losing their pay or losing their job,” Murray said. “That’s not a choice we should be asking anyone to make in the United States in the 21st century.”

Alexander said that paid sick leave is a “good idea.” But if lawmakers want to require employers to provide it, then the federal government should have to foot the bill, he argued.

Tom Cotton really hates China.

We are a great people. We rise to every challenge, we vanquish every foe, and we come through adversity even better than before. I have every confidence America will once again marshal the resolve, toughness, and genius of our people to overcome the serious threat to our health and well-being posed by the Wuhan coronavirus. We will emerge stronger from this challenge, we will hold accountable those who inflicted it on the world, and we will prosper in the new day.”

Coronavirus: Italy to suspend mortgage payments amid outbreak - BBC News
Mortgage payments will be suspended across Italy as part of measures to soften the economic blow of coronavirus on households, a minister has said.

Laura Castelli, Italy's deputy economy minister, told Radio Anch'io: "Yes, that will be the case, for individuals and households."

...
On Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ordered people to stay home and seek permission for essential travel.

Italy's coronavirus death toll jumped from 366 to 463 on Monday. It is the worst-hit country after China.

WHO Expert: Aggressive Action Against Coronavirus Cuts Down On Spread : Goats and Soda : NPR
Hong Kong and Singapore were hit early with the coronavirus. But each now has fewer than 200 cases, while France, Germany and Spain, which were hit late, all have more than 10 times that number.

Three weeks ago, Italy had only three cases. Now it has more than 10,000.

The veteran of numerous global health crises, from SARS to bird flu to Ebola, Ryan points out that incredibly aggressive measures by China, South Korea and Japan appear to be bringing outbreaks in those countries under control.

He has been pleading with governments around the world to prepare for the new coronavirus before it shows up at their door — or to spring into action when it does arrive.
Something that Hong Kong and Singapore did, while Italy and Iran were very lackadaisical, and in denial about the disease.
"I mean, you had the Iran deputy health minister coughing on national television talking about coronavirus," Jha says. "But really not taking it seriously."

That deputy health minister later tested positive for the virus.
The US?
Our response is much, much worse than almost any other country that's been affected," Jha says.

He uses the words "stunning," "fiasco" and "mind-blowing" to describe how bad it is.

"And I don't understand it," he says incredulously. "I still don't understand why we don't have extensive testing. Vietnam! Vietnam has tested more people than America has."
How have they compared?
Hong Kong, which began testing in January and has been right up against the epicenter of the global outbreak, had only confirmed 126 cases through March 10. On that same day the U.S. reported twice that number for the previous 24 hours.
Shows what a horrible leader Trump has been.

President Trump has banned travel to the USA from Europe for 30 days. The UK is exempt from the travel ban. A pretty drastic step. This will cause major disruptions to many industries.

Not just in major industries. As is his usual behavior, Trump neglected to inform anyone about this, preferring instead to make it a surprise decree. So he did not tell the EU or the UK ahead of time that he was going to ban travel from the EU. They learned it in the same way everyone else did--from his announcement--which set off panic and chaos in European airports and the airline industry. Not surprisingly, the news caused the stock market to tank. This would especially not surprise people buying and selling stocks who had advance warning of the move. (Anyone monitoring the Trump family's stock sales and purchases?)

The ban itself made no sense at all, since it excluded the UK, where the Health Minister has tested positive for CV19. It did not include Brazil, where Bolsonaro is being tested for CV19. It did not include South Korea, which has had a major outbreak of CV19. It did not include Australia, where actor Tom Hanks and his wife recently caught CV19. And now we learn that it does not include US citizens returning from Europe. It did include a number of EU countries that have relatively mild numbers of cases or no reported cases. Oh, and nobody should mention that WHO has recommended against such travel bans, because they tend to impede the flow of medical supplies and expertise needed around the world to help with the pandemic. In any case, the disease has already spread into almost every corner of the US, so travel bans are too late to do anything to impede the spread of CV19.

But he APPEARS to be doing something decisive. Y'all wanted him to do SOMETHING, right? Dithering didn't work, lying didn't work, hoping it'd blow over didn't work. At least he did SOMETHING and you're still bitching?
Geez.

Geez.

Personally the best thing I think he could do is invite Bolsonaro and Putin to the white House for a celebrity appearance of Tom Hanks and to discuss their future plans as dictator friends, flying all together on a nice private jet.

So how long until Trump orders the killing of cats to deal with this virus?

Biden just gave a speech on the virus and omfg, what a relief to hear someone sounding like a competent president again. The contrast to Trump's whinefest last night is so stark.

Yeah, but according to some people here, Biden only makes sense half the time, so he'll probably botch the next thing. [/sarcasm]
