Trump's Appointments

But nobody ever tries to rob me any more. I believe there’s something about not giving a damn that puts them off. Or maybe because I dress in sweats when not on horseback. That could be it - even scummy robbers probably dress better.
Yup. I don't do sweats but I'm pretty casual, don't give a fuck about fashion. When I'm headed out to the trail I'm actually carrying some reasonably expensive stuff but what mugger is going to recognize that? And if they do--the most visible item's primary job is to be found.

Once you’re 5-10 miles from the trailhead, fear of robbers definitely takes a back seat to more immediate concerns! For one thing, you probably aren’t carrying a whole lot, and if you are, you are likely in far better shape than any robbers you’re likely to encounter. They’re not going to be real excited about carrying stuff back to the trailhead …
Of course you are aware of the strength of the survival ethic and mindset that settles upon people, once they’re removed far enough from civilization. The spirit of co-operation mysteriously becomes elevated to primacy IME.

I carry around $500 on me. But I buy a lot of stuff used that has either never been used or is slightly worn. First in line with cash gets the deal.

As the economy slumps, you should try it. This method beats the pants off Amazon. It just requires patience.

I try to keep a couple thousand at home.

I just picked up last year's floor sample lawn mower and snowblower for my daughter's new place from a company going out of business. $100 each cash only. You can't do that if you need to stop at the bank.

The most I've had on me was $6000 cash for a car.

I keep some cash at home too. It’s just for convenience - a thousand bucks lasts typically over a year because most everything we buy goes onto credit cards that rebate 2-6%. Stuff that we spend cash on has to be like the stuff you describe; new or near new, unused or barely used and deeply discounted.
After this last week’s story of an armed gang of home invaders claiming to be ICE agents but never offering ID, broke into the home of American citizens, stole everything of value and disappeared into the night … makes me wonder if I might want to photo-document everything in the house and put the photos on a flash drive in a safe deposit box … I never used to think like that.

There are rare guitars and vintage electronics around the house that would be quite un-replaceable. Most everything else is “just stuff”, but that doesn’t mean it would be fine if Trump’s (or other) marauders decided to steal or destroy everything in the house.

I tucked away about a grand sometime before covid. All I've ever used it for is weed. There's still about six hundred there.
My truck became somewhat more theft proof in that you have to stick the key in the door lock to open it. I still have the fob on my key ring. They can push all they like. Maybe my next vehicle should be a manual transmission, that will foil even more criminals. I once owned a three on the tree. That would be nearly theft proof today unless the crook was like eighty years old and him I'd bet the hell out of. In my 60+ years on the planet I've only ever been robbed once and that was a cheap pair of speakers after parking my truck on the street at the shipyards in the dark in front of an even darker alley.
Lucky for me I get the majority of my news from Reuters so my reality isn't as bad as those who get their news from social media. Precarious though it may be, we are still functioning as a government. My biggest concern going forward is the non-collection of data, data Dickhead doesn't like because then we'll be wandering in the dark even after Trump is no more.

I've taken a mental inventory of stuff in my house in the unlikely event that I'm robbed. I could kiss most of it goodbye (I did so for half of it in my divorce) but I don't know what I'd do if someone stole my '79 Stratocaster and the hard drives that contain the music I've collected in my career.

I habitually have enough money to get a robber through the day if they’re not too badly addicted. $60-80 in emergency cash in the car, $20-50 in my wallet and no ATM access. A robber could make an easy getaway with enough to stave off tremors for at least few hours, or risk it all trying to get blood out of a turnip.

Yep. I'm worth robbing if you were to consider my net worth only. But as an everyday citizen on the street? Naw. I very rarely carry much cash, if any, and I often wear old crappy sneakers, t-shirt, pants with the knees worn and unkempt hair and a beard stubble. Plus I drive a 25 year old truck with a cracked windshield and dented rear tailight panel. In fact, a couple of years ago, I stopped at a 7-11 to get a snack and the clerk asked if I was going to pay with an EBT card! :p That was a little wake up call to my self that I should probably put in a little more effort, which I did for about 3 weeks. But was soon back to my old ways. Oh well. As Popeye used to say, "I yam what I yam".

I don't know what I'd do if someone stole my '79 Stratocaster
My ‘79 Schecter “Strat”, bought in ‘79 three weeks after it left the Van Nuys shop (left). Still the most precise instrument I ever had (other than a Steinway long since sold).

The one on the right is a 1959 melody maker. I got it in 1968 and should have left it original but had a new pick guard made and an original Tele pickup put in the bridge position and the sunburst finish stripped. My two favs.

Insuring them is a difficult thing to figure out; both are pretty rare, but the Schecter being 100% original is super rare - that shop didn’t produce a lot of finished product back then and a lot of what they did were custom orders by big stars. So it’s unreplaceable, but that doesn’t mean gigantic value.

Well, it has been over 100 days, so this seemed past due.

Mike Waltz, President Donald Trump's national security adviser, is set to leave his White House post amid continued fallout weeks after he invited a journalist into a chat between top national security officials discussing plans for Yemen airstrikes.

A source familiar with the situation on May 1 confirmed Waltz's exit, as well as deputy national security adviser Alex Wong. Their departures mark the first major staff shake-up since Trump's return to the White House in January.

Trump had publicly stood by Waltz after his national security adviser and other members of the chat vigorously denied sharing any classified war plans on the publicly available app Signal. The chat was revealed when Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, published a March 24 story detailing how Waltz accidentally invited him into the communications.
Pete Hegseth shared this stuff with family on Signal, still has a job. This implies the Trump Admin is as dysfunctional as ever and there are a bunch of trolls warring with each other for access and control of Trump.

Laura Loomer apparently doesn't like him. When news comes out of Laura Loomer being a spy for Russia... no one would be surprised. It'd be an accident that got someone killed at the County Fair... just seemed inevitable. Laura Loomer makes Stephan Miller and Steve Bannon appear like James Carville.

Yes, do that re: photo document everything.

Actually inspiration for me. I’m perhaps foolishly not concerned about armed robbery but there are things usury as tornadoes and fires. Documenting for insurance is a smart thing to do.

$3K in cash really is a lot, especially now that large transfers are possible with a few clicks on one's iPhone. Except for gambling or a large purchase of illegal drugs why would anyone need to carry that much cash? Did any reporters ask that obvious question?

Perhaps the simplest explanation is correct. The Trump family is known for grifting. Ms. Noem might have been emulating her Führer: she saw a chance to score a few grand off an insurance company (or the taxpayers) by lying about the lost cash.
While I agree $3K is a lot of cash there's a good reason I do not have any such financial apps on my phone: no way for a robber to force me to access money.
Yeah, I don’t do financial transactions via phone, either.

I would not go that far as to say that Loomer is worse than Stephen Milker or Steve Bannon. But then I think that past a certain degree of evil, corrupt, incompetent, degrees no longer matter.

Indeed, though, Miller at least staffed with Bachman and Sessions after graduating. I have no idea how a guy like that can rise up so quickly to being a senior advisor on policy for the Trump Campaign in 2016 when Miller really hadn't done much of anything to be Senior Advisor on anything but being a white nationalist.

Laura Loomer, who is she?! She isn't anyone, ran for one House once. She is 31 and as far as I can tell, has never held a job in politics. She makes Ocasio-Cortez look like Pelosi as far as experience. No comparison when it comes to intelligence between the two. She makes Angela Lansbury in Manchurian Candidate look like Mr. Smith in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, she is that obvious of a spy / provocateur.

Meanwhile in Trump Has the Tiniest of Circles... Trump names SoS Rubio his acting NSA.... and he's shuffling Walz to the UN to take up Stefanik's position that never happened because the GOP fears losing her seat.

Trump apparently doesn't know anyone else. The SoS is kind of a busy job and Rubio isn't supposed to be holding Trump's hand.
