Her son got lost health care costs and was still covered despite losing his job. She thinks trumpcare is the reason.

Of course, those of us who love in a world of facts know that this can't possibly be the case because trumpcare hasn't passed yet. If he son got health coverage despite losing his job, that was due to Obamacare.

So despite the fact that Obamacare is helping her son, she voted in the last election to get rid of Obamacare and replace it with something that will probably hurt her son.

This should not be surprising to anyone who paid attention. After all, most conservatives and libertarians are convinced that the economy was better under Bush then under Obama, and are this eager to return the economy to the way it was under Bush.

Both the economic issue and this moron woman illustrate something important about American democracy: I'm not sure democracy can survive this.

In a democracy, the ultimate authority tests with the people, and the people make big important decisions, exerting their will over the government. If the people are making decisions based on lies because they are fundamentally divorced from reality, then their decisions will not be good decisions.

This is a serious existential problem, and I fear our whole way of life may not survive this. Millions of conservatives will drive or nation into a ditch, and because they believe in lies, they will never accept responsibility for the results and will continue to make things worse and worse. I honestly don't see a way out of this. The only way to avoid the ditch is for millions of conservatives to admit that they are wrong about a great many things and to start accepting facts again instead of alternative facts.

And we all know that is never going to happen.

Wow...that lady was able to 'teach' first graders?

Re-introduce civics to public education and make demonstrating capability with it a requirement for diploma . Doing so gets those charterie types right in the arse. Maybe we should make Greek and Latin core disciplines as well. Probably would increase respect for why founders thought electoral college was a good idea and improve road construction practices as well.*

* the last bit is a wild hair due to my living on the WC where ground moves.

Conservatives already removed civics as a requirement because civics classes turns people into Communists. How do you think they would react to a proposed law like this? How likely do you think it is that Republican politicians would pass a law like this?

That lump of cells thinks that a tax credit reduced an unemployed person's health care premium to $88 a month?! Can she do math? ($567 - $88)*12 is a lot more than the maximum $4,000 tax credit... in a bill that is still in committee. My goodness, Trump supporters are unbelievably stupid when it comes to politics, and math.

Former 1st Grade teacher? They probably modified the law in Tennessee that requires a person to at least pass the grade they teach first.

And then we get to the best part:
WP Article linked in OP story said:
McComic said she’s not worried about her disability benefits changing or her 3-year-old granddaughter getting kicked off Medicaid or her 33-year-old son’s premiums going up.
Her daughter is on fucking Medicaid. These people have made obfuscation a god damn art. They should have an Obfuscation Olympics.

Well, the good news is that when her health care costs go up, it's because all of those damn elitists Democrats were blocking Trump from fixing the system that Obama broke. She will always have someone other than Trump to blame, so her rage will always have a target and she'll never have to calm down.

So...
Should Trumpster stories be listed in the Religion forum? Faith-based stupidity running counter to evidence, facts, logic, grammar....?

Yup.

It's the same as with economic discussions. No matter how much economic ruin they bring, Republican voters will always demand more. They are now completely divorced from reality, except in that they still make decisions in a real world.

I feel sorry for the kids in that woman's class. She sure isn't teaching them anything to do with thinking critically. Sad.

But is teaching them that the reason they don't have jobs when they grow up is because of the fucking Mexicans, so she's preparing them for careers as a Fox News correspondent.

To be fair, critical thinking has never been a skill that is learned in grade school, much less first grade. In first grade simple math, reading and writing are the subjects of focus. That said, I don't think this lady has much business teaching simple math, either, she certainly is unable to apply it when it comes to paying for insurance.

Not correct Critical thinking skills are a life long development. When a child asks "How do you know?" after being told something that's a developing critical thinking skillset, and how you answer that question can establish his or her future thought processes.

How do you know this?

Certainly it is something that is developed over a lifetime, but it is not taught in the first grade. Students don't normally get the "How do you know?" questions from teachers until much later in their schooling. They are just being taught the things that they know at that point. The answer for "How do you know?" will almost always be "because you just told me", so it is a stupid question to ask in first grade.

So...
Should Trumpster stories be listed in the Religion forum? Faith-based stupidity running counter to evidence, facts, logic, grammar....?
It's human, not religious. The reason it's so obvious in religion is religion's full of humans. I see it all day long, every day, in business dealings with the self-absorbed consumers. They want to save money but have no care at all in acquiring the skills to do so. Explain how to actually save money, and they're angry because you're insinuating they don't know everything. So a lot of them get robbed time and again and don't even know it.

It's much easier to form opinions and be sure of one's beliefs. That way they "save money" even while losing it, because belief shields them from how they are fucking up. If they feel there's never enough money, it's other people's fault. The fix isn't learning skills; it's insisting that reality molds to their wants.

Same phenomenon in the Trump voters. Same phenomenon among fundy religionists. It's not religious, it's that aspect of humanity that con artists have thrived on ever since politics and commerce first started. Tell me what I want to hear or I won't believe you.

Even the evaluation of scientific studies among intelligent critical thinkers will be influenced by what they want to believe:

There is a huge network of fake news being sent directly to Trump supporters.

They do not trust places like CNN or the NYT.

They watch FOX NEWS.

They know nothing about any of the incredible chaos that is still the Trump administration. Know nothing about failed orders to keep Muslims out. Know nothing about lies about contact with Russian officials. Know nothing about Trump's plan to cut social services they use.

Bill Maher calls it the right-wing "bubble".

And he does not exaggerate.

There are millions of Americans living in an impenetrable bubble of fake news.

It is the absolute death of democracy, which needs facts about the world like the body needs oxygen.
