Twitter likely to take idiots offer to buy them for $43 billion

Went to Twitter's website and first things were escort-porn stuff. I never use Twitter.

Author Amanda Marcotte then continues "This notion of Musk's intelligence clings to the discourse around him for one simple reason: He is very, very rich." and "You probably would have never heard of Elon Musk if he wasn't a white man from a wealthy family that literally owned an emerald mine in South Africa."

We know of Musk because of SpaceX.

I still can't understand how he could have accomplished that with the utter ineptitude he's displaying about Twitter.
It's simple. He buys other great minds. His is not so great but a shit ton of money covers a great many flaws.

I don't use the Twitter app. I access through a browser with an adblocker so I never see the ads.

The ads are allegedly targeted ads. Meaning the algorithmic thingy thinks you're interested in Escort-porn for some reason. :sneaky:

I just made sure I could log into my twitter account so that I can delete it at the appropriate time.

Musk is a loon and sounds like Trump. He doesn't seem to realize that the problem is HIM and what he has said that he'll do. Many advertisers don't want to be associated with crazy shit.

Speaking of moderation...

The last 34 years of my career I worked for two companies. One was bought and sold 4 times while I was there. The other I think 6 times. Each new group had grand plans for change. The last change of ownership and CEO may be taking the company where it needs to go finally. But not once in the 11 times that we changed owners did the new owners come in like a Banshee on acid and proceed to piss of the customers, the suppliers and the employees all in 24 hours with brash and irreversible decisions and moronic comments.

I really wonder if Musk has lost some of his marbles or got some new spiked ones.

The anguish Elon Musk elicits from some quarters is fascinating. Here’s a guy, trying to save the planet and people are rounding on him like he has just pissed in their corn flakes.

Nothing says "moderation" like a guy who launched his car on orbit around the sun.

Elon Musk may have run afoul of laws against mass layoffs without adequate notification.

Lisa Bloom on Twitter: "Hey Twitter employees getting laid off tomorrow! ..." / Twitter
Hey Twitter employees getting laid off tomorrow! IMPORTANT INFO from a CA employment attorney (me):

CA's "WARN" law requires Twitter to give you 60 days notice of a massive layoff.
A layoff of 50+ employees within a 30 day period qualifies.
I know you didn't get that notice.

This WARN law applies to all California employers of 75+ employees, which obviously includes Twitter with its thousands of employees.
Purpose of the law is to give laid off employees time to figure out how to handle this disruption.
And Elon completely ignores it.

Employers like Twitter who violate the WARN Act face civil penalties of $500/day for each violation. With thousands of employees, this could be significant, though maybe not to Elon. Employees laid off in violation of the WARN Act receive back pay at the employee's final rate or 3 year average of compensation, whichever is higher. Twitter would also be liable for workers' medical expenses that would have been covered under an employee benefit plan. Twitter will be liable for all of these (civil penalties, lost compensation, lost medical and other benefits) & attorneys' fees for the 60 days it failed to give workers notice.

This flagrant violation of workers rights is outrageous.
Who's in for a class action? LET'S DO THIS

Also, CA's strong antidiscrimination laws apply to Twitter's big layoff tomorrow. Are people of color, women and/or older workers disproportionately chosen, for example?

This was done so hastily, so slapdash, so that the world's richest man can get even richer faster.
We'll see how long Twitter lets my posts stay up. If they take them down tonight, before the layoffs, that means they were on notice of the law I cite and chose to punish me rather than follow it.
That's consciousness of guilt and I'd use it as the basis for punitive damages.

I'm now in contact with many Twitter workers who reached out to me about a class action lawsuit overnight.
You had the right to 60 days notice under federal and state WARN Acts.
You didn't get it.
Mr. Musk, the storm is coming.

#TwitterLayoffs

Twitter employees, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING when you're laid off.
Consult with an attorney first.
Buried in the fine print may be a waiver of your rights under CA and federal law.
Those rights are important and valuable!

EM has done a similar purge in the past.
Erik :: they/them on Twitter: "@LisaBloom Elon tried to lay off everyone ..." / Twitter
Elon tried to lay off everyone in the Las Vegas office of Tesla solar last year, without the 60 days notice. The company just kept telling us the lay off was coming, but never made an official announcement of lay off. As each deadline approached, it was pushed back.

The company initially gave us 90 days to move to Utah (on our own dime, and no raises) or be laid off as the Vegas office closed.
People who didn’t want to move to Ut quit. Those of us that waited it out were told the lay off date was pushed when it was 2 weeks away.

They pushed the lay off date three times, always last minute, to the end of the year. They kept piling work onto the teams that remained. They refused to say when the office would fully close and the lay off would happen, and refused to make us permanent work from home.

Elon and Tesla kept stringing us along, holding a layoff over our heads, waiting for us to just quit. That way he never had to announce a mass layoff and give 60 days notice.
I’m not saying he’ll do that here; but he is willing to skirt the law and hang everyone out to dry

Elon Musk on Twitter: "Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists. Extremely messed up!
They’re trying to destroy free speech in America." / Twitter

General Mills latest to halt Twitter ads as Musk takeover sparks brand exodus | Twitter | The Guardian - "Cheerios and Lucky Charms cereal company joins General Motors Co and Audi among others in pulling money from the platform"

General Mills, Audi and Pfizer Join Growing List of Companies Pausing Twitter Ads - WSJ - "Advertisers are concerned about a flurry of executive departures at Twitter and new owner Elon Musk’s plans for content moderation"

Back to The Guardian.
The growing exodus of advertisers comes amid concerns Musk will scale back misinformation and security protections on the platform. As civil rights groups call potential moderation issues into question, companies are considering whether staying on Twitter might tarnish their brands.

Shortly before taking over the San Francisco company last week, Musk issued a vow to advertisers that he would not allow Twitter to become a “free-for-all hellscape,” an indication there would still be consequences for violators of its rules against harassment, violence or election and Covid-related misinformation.

But since then some users have posted racial slurs and recirculated long-debunked conspiracy theories in an apparent attempt to see if the site’s policies were still being enforced. The NAACP said this week it has expressed to Musk its concerns about “the dangerous, life-threatening hate and conspiracies that have proliferated on Twitter” under his watch. Other civil liberties groups like Glaad and Color of Change are calling on all major advertisers to pause their ad buys, arguing the sweeping layoffs at the company could jeopardize content moderation standards.

Other big Twitter advertisers like Warner Discovery, Coca-Cola and Nestle did not respond to requests for comment about their advertising plans.

Elon Musk says activists want to "destroy free speech" as advertisers flee Twitter - CBS News
Numerous advertisers have paused their spending on Twitter as the Tesla CEO makes sweeping changes at the company. Twitter employees on Friday started to receive layoff notice amid reports that Musk plans to cut about 3,700 jobs — roughly half of Twitter's workforce. The cuts include employees responsible for enforcing community standards and safety measures across the platform.

Twitter: Elon Musk blames 'activist groups' for earnings drop - BBC News
An internal email sent to staff earlier on Friday said the mass job cuts were "unfortunately necessary to ensure the company's success moving forward".

Staff confirmed on Twitter they had been logged out of work laptops and Slack, a messaging system.

Many staff revealed that they had been axed in posts on the platform, painting a picture of cuts that spanned the globe and hit departments that ranged from marketing to engineering.

They included communications, content curation, and product development employees.

A team that focused on research into how Twitter uses algorithms - an issue that was a priority for Mr Musk - was also sacked, according to a tweet from a former senior manager at the company. But that was later denied.

They're being paid until February 2023, but with no work requirements, precisely because of this law. I cannot believe the class action law suit stands a chance.

Part of it is Twitter is nothing like Tesla. He is way outside his sphere.
I'm not impressed with Tesla, either.

SpaceX, though, is a genuine breakthrough.

I hope she gets a disgruntled Tweep to confirm her account was sabotaged by management. Even if not a lawsuit, it would be great publicity for the anti-Musk movement!

Went to Twitter's website and first things were escort-porn stuff. I never use Twitter.
I never clicked to Twitter deliberately until, back aching, I Googled "massage chiang mai" and got lots of Twitter hits. None had the precious blue check-mark, and they mostly appeared to be scams.
