Video worth a million words...

And one generally finds such callous comments on conservative religious leaning websites.

I think the root cause is the stark contrast between the value they assign to certain peoples lives and that assigned by a court.

There actually is a formula or algorithm used to determine a person's worth in these cases. It's easier if the victim is a working adult. Future earnings are extrapolated, based on statistical averages. It's much more difficult for a minor. In any case, the reason "damages" are awarded it to relieve the financial gap left when a person dies.

No amount of money can truly compensate for the loss of a loved one. I've been fortunate. People in my family tend to die old, of natural causes. I have attended many funerals of friends who died young, and funerals for children of friends. In every instance, the bereaved would have happily traded a coffin filled with Krugerrands to have their child back.

Most likely $5m is the limit of the city's law enforcement liability policy.

and at 5 million the city probably thought they were getting off cheap since they had seen the video

I didn't even need a calculator.
What assumptions did you make about his legitimate earning potential and likelihood of premature death or long-term incarceration?

I took you at your word that by your estimation, during his working life, he would not be able to earn a total of $500,000.00, or one tenth of $5M.

He was a young man and would have had at least 40 years of working life ahead of him. My assumption is that his average earnings per year over 40 years would be in excess of $12,500.

I assumed a normal life span. Giving you the maximum benefit of the doubt, I assumed it would take him some years to reach an income of >$12K/year.

On the other hand, you seem to assume he had only a shortened lifetime filled with repeated incarcerations and no earnings. Go figure.

I'm not just making up stuff. To be perfectly honest, I have a family member who has had serious struggles with substance abuse since he was in high school-- both serious alcohol abuse, and quite a lot of drug abuse plus multiple incarcerations. No college degree. He's certainly topped well over $500,000 of legitimate earnings from the various trade work he's picked up. Except for when he was in jail or prison, he's always had a job and one that wasn't too bad paying. Of course he has nothing because, well drugs and alcohol have consumed most of his earnings as well as his time, and have done a pretty serious number on his body and now, the last we talked, I'm guessing there's some brain damage, too. Maybe he was just pretty loaded. It was a phone conversation so I didn't have any visual cues. But the last time I saw him face to face--well, he was either loaded or the abuse was taking a toll. Sometimes, you just don't ask and ignore what you can because: family you rarely see. He was always pretty smart, even if he did dumb stuff. But he's got a decent paying job now. And when he loses that one--and he will lose that one, he'll find another pretty quick. He always does.

One more time, Derec: Realize that the guy was on the ground with a bullet in him and the cop just pumped him full of bullets....13 more! The cop did wrong in shooting the guy in the first place. Property crimes do not warrant a death by cop sentence. The settlement was punitive damages for having a cop out of control and killing someone. You are one prejudiced mutha! Supposing that was YOUR brother, and you knew the circumstances that landed him there. Gratuitous murder and mutilation by service pistol is a real crime no matter what you think.

all those other cops must be terrible at their jobs since they didn't fire a single shot to stop Laquan's murderous spree and instead stopped the righteous warrior from emptying another clip in him.

Eh. Justice denied? (Are whites allowed "safe spaces" at universities?)

What the fuck kind of question is that? Universities are supposed to provide a safe space for ALL of their students, not just for "whites."

Anyway, they arrested the dumbass pretty much immediately. Do not pass go, do not collect a degree.

do you have anything relevant or of value to offer to the discussion?

Is that a rhetorical question or have you not been paying attention?
