Video worth a million words...

There actually is a formula or algorithm used to determine a person's worth in these cases. It's easier if the victim is a working adult. Future earnings are extrapolated, based on statistical averages. It's much more difficult for a minor. In any case, the reason "damages" are awarded it to relieve the financial gap left when a person dies.
So how does that translate to this guy being worth 5 million dollars? He wasn't likely to legitimately earn even one tenth of that amount over his lifetime.
And why does his mother, who neglected him all his life, get to become millionaire from his death?
Same goes for the ridiculously huge payouts for the likes of Freddy Grey or Eric Garner.

Future earnings are only part of the award. There is also compensation for loss of affection and punitive damages. How much should we ask for, if you were shot by a policeman?

So what's the goal of the protesters other than protesting for the sake of protesting?
Amazingly, my goal in having a kid was not to hope that he'd die in such situations as to earn me millions in reparations. I'd a lot better have the kid, at the end of the day, even if he's in jail awaiting trial for something he did, than have millions for his unjust execution.

I'd say 'but maybe that's just me,' except some 'idiots' in Chicago seem to agree with me.

By all accounts his mother didn't care too much about him given that he was raised by his great-grandmother until she died and was in and out of foster homes for years. But now she gets to profit from his death. Doesn't seem right.

And I still have no idea what these idiots in Chicago want. They have the indictment, they have a huge payout.
As idiotic as Minneapolis protesters are, at least they have a clearly defined demand - release the tapes before the investigation is done, even if that contradicts Minnesota law. But what do the Chicago protesters want?

This wasn't a court verdict. Much like Freddy Grey and Eric Garner, these liberal-run cities offered these ridiculously huge sums without any real need. They did not even attempt to negotiate a settlement more favorable to the taxpayers of these cities.
How much should we ask for, if you were shot by a policeman?
Trick question. I do not do PCP and go around menacing my neighborhood with a knife. Neither do I attack police cars with said knife.

If liberal run cities do this (offer ridiculously huge sums), shouldn't you be mad at the officer that provided the opportunity for the liberal run city to offer the ridiculously huge sum? Black folk getting killed doesn't seem to bother you, but black folk getting money seemingly does, so when will you be castigating the officer?

Your math is way off.

They want the police to stop murdering people on the streets. They want the police to treat black people like human beings. They are outraged at the behavior of the police officer who shot a human being lying prone on the ground 14 more times to make sure he was dead.

To understand why people are protesting you would have to have the ability to tell right from wrong and the ability to see the world from the perspective of others.

Fucking Rahm Emmanuel!

Will he be forced out in disgrace like he should be?

I'd ask for a million dollars. It won't fully compensate us for the loss of Derec's posts, but we could use the money to hire a decent ghost writer. ;)

Police say, "Black man, stop!"
Black man say, "no."
Police shoot Black man.
Black man no listen, but Black man stop.

Police say, "White man, stop!"
White man say, "okay."
Police no shoot White man.
White man listen, and White man stop.

Police spokesperson say, "Blame the victim!"
Public say, "okay."
Police no shoot Public (this time).
Police spokesperson say "Good boy, Public!"

Nor does his death or your vitriolic and degrading posts. Now that is out of the way, do you have anything relevant or of value to offer to the discussion?

So, I have been harsh on BLM in the past, partly because I thought they were choosing *some* poor cases to be highlighted - and there are many cases available.

This case is a great one. I watched some of the streaming last night and said they would protest until Rahm resigned. That would be awesome.

How do you figure?
And speaking of the payout - will any of it be used to compensate for the damages Laquan caused during his PCP fueled rampage?

You are missing the big picture here, likely deliberately. A police officer fired 14 bullets into a human being lying prone on the ground, a person who had already been shot and brought down. Your attempts to belittle the victim and his family instead of focusing on what is important, is obscene and repulsive. Are you really so dehumanized that you do not recognize what people find wrong with this killing?

Between the traffic light thing and his masturbatory charter school shenanigans, Rahm has cultivated a reputation for having his priorities completely ass-backwards. He effectively runs the city as if every single person IN the city exists primarily to make his job easier.

I didn't even need a calculator.
What assumptions did you make about his legitimate earning potential and likelihood of premature death or long-term incarceration?

Earning potential of the cars he allegedly damaged? Zero.

Likelihood of premature death: depends on the make and model, but if one of them was a Jeep Cherokee or a Chevy Aveo then it was very likely.

Likelihood of long-term incarceration: the expensive ones might be garaged and the derelict ones might be impounded, but cars aren't incarcerated, so zero again.
