While I don’t want to be on Teump’s side, the article says that the Dems want to look at his returns in order to scout them for illegal activity. That doesn’t seem to be a valid reason. The process should be that they present probable cause for illegal activity and then make the request based on that.
1) why would we believe the trumpster fire about this compared to anything else? While I don’t want to be on Teump’s side, the article says that the Dems want to look at his returns in order to scout them for illegal activity. According to Trump himself, his returns have been under audit for the past three years. If there was any illegal activity, it would be the responsibility of the IRS to take action.
We can choose from one of two certainties. Either the returns will indicate illegal activity, or embarrassing information. Actually, the embarrassing element is guaranteed. If the tax returned made Donald Trump appear to be a shrewd wealthy businessman, say something in the mode of Warren Buffet, copies of all relevant documents would have been passed out at campaign rallies.
On the bright side, we don't know what the Federal Prosecutors at the Southern District of New York are doing with their time. They have all of Michael Cohen's records. Now that the Special Prosecutor also has Paul Manafort's and Roger Stone's records, as well, there's no predicting what will come out in the next year.
We can be fairly certain of one thing. It really doesn't matter what politics a US Attorney might hold, none of them wants to go down in history as the guy who let Donald Trump get away.

IRS isn’t tasked with looking at the same details about income that a US Attorney would be. IRS’s main concern is the reporting of the income.
