She got 3 days in a youth detention center while the rapist received 2 years (sentence suspended). I agree there is something wrong there, but there is no need to distort what happened to make your point.

While I agree that this was certainly not an act of justice. I read that Germany has strict laws about insulting others. And while I think that is insane, even though we may be facing something similar here before too long, I also read in another article that one can get a sentence of up to 2 years for publicly insulting someone. I also read that according to German law, the men were given suspended sentences along with having to do community service 60 hours a week, due to their age. I read that in a different article. Again, that is the law in Germany. And, 5 were German citizens. Why didn't you mention that? There are all types of dangerous men, regardless of their ethnicity or religious beliefs. Sadly, a lot of men are never convicted of their crimes of rape. I don't agree what happened regarding this crime, but I don't make up the laws in Germany either. The people there are outraged, btw,

Germans, for historical reasons, have a problem with racist hate crime. I think that's more a historical anomally specific to Germany than anything that will spread west.

Germany and the Anglophile world have quite different communication styles. In the Anglophile world nobody talks straight. Everything is wrapped up in a clever, often ambiguous, package. Meaning that direct insults are felt as much harsher.

In the Germanic world people just say whatever is on their mind. No German needs to worry what their colleagues think of them. They know. Germans put a high value on informing others what's in their cognitive blind spot. Often unsolicited advice. That's a big no-no across the waters west. The English speaking world is more of a conspiracy to allow others to cling to their delusions.

The cultures have quite different styles of communicating.

Caste led to prosperity and stability in India for many thousands of years. History disagrees with you. Caste is a bad idea in our post industrial world. But it wasn't always a bad idea. Feudalism also worked out great for Europe, for a thousand years, until technology allowed us to ditch it.

We have such an extreme abundance in the modern world, we often forget the economic realities of most cultures historically, and why the stuff they did was functional

I don't think so. I think any cultural norms regarding sex (or anything) is functional within its own culture. Problems only really occur when cultures are mixed.

I do have a close Arab friend (who moved to Denmark) as an adult. He says that Arab cultural norms regarding sex is horrendous, toxic and just lead to nobody being happy, fulfilled or trusting their partners. He's clearly more of an expert than me on Arab dating. But a culture has evolved in a context for a reason. Cultural norms tend to be functional. As in that they create social stability.

That said. I think we have a bunch of social norms that are useful and functional, we just don't understand why.

An example. A friend is a zen buddhist monk. A new abott decided to change the morning prayer a bit. This had the knock on effect of making discipline, all over the monastery fall apart. So they changed it back. Small things can have big effects down the line

I think it's simply not well adapted to a global mobile culture. There's a reason USA is the richest country on Earth. I don't think it's just down to luck. High performance American consultants I have worked with in Scandinavia are often frustrated they're not allowed to work as hard as they want.

Of course it's not just luck. Other factors include being a large nation, with massive resources, with no geographical connection with Europe (it is protected by oceans), having a huge population, being one of the oldest nations in the world (in terms of being a unified nation), benefiting from the post World War II situation.

Contrast that with Australia, that has some of these factors, but importantly lacks the large population, due to being such a harsh country and also a younger nation, and was actually devastated by both World Wars (in terms of losing a large proportion of its young men - both in actual casualties, and because those men weren't available as workers for many years).

I have worked in both Australia and USA. The two cultures are remarkably similar IMHO. They're more similar to eachother, imho, than they are to their mother country, UK.

Being very far away will of course impact a nation where being internationally connected is important. Having online phone meetings for Europeans with Australians will never be easy.

And several of them are bigger than Texas, which by the way is still traumatized by Alaska becoming a state and taking away its claim of being the biggest state.
