According to Wikipedia, it is an ancient heraldic element that has only recently (19C-ish) become associated with Islam.

I'm pretty sure that it represents the Fenris Wolf eating the sun to kick off Ragnorak. Just goes to show what I've always been saying about the Koran being a total rip-off of the Nordic myths.

Always remembered that it was the Turks that took it over from the Byzantine/East Roman Empire after they captured Constantinople and called it Istanbul. Don't remember who or where told me that though, and I have been wrong once before in my life, I think.
