After exploring Leonard Cohen's discography over the past few months I've noticed he's one of the rare musicians who put out better quality material at the end of his career. His lyrics were still quite good, the albums were better produced and knew how to work with his inability to sing (they started leveraging women's voices much more). They were also much more subdued with a sensual feeling. That is until You Want it Darker which was more of a reflection on death.

Released in 2001

Released in 2004

Think of the material that Bob Dylan's put out in the past few decades - few people blink an eye with his new releases except the most ardent fans.

It's a cover, but the backstory is that the artist's wife took her own life. He recorded and released this song as a tribute to her. Gary's got a great voice, and is a nice guy. I hear his pain in this song.

Delights" painting (1480-1490 circa) there is some music written on the butt of one of the characters in hell.
But how sounds this 15th Century melody?
Here is how is the 600-years-old butt music from hell sounds:
Enchanting!
Arranged in the style of the period (the music score on the butt is just a short riff intended to be repeated) and played on Lute, Harp, and Hurdy-Gurdy by James Spalink.
The melody is based on the transcription by Amelia Hamrick.

I like the earlier version that year at the O2 better, but there's no good video of that one.

Not surprisingly, this song came out in 1977 a year after the Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever.

The conductor, Yujo Ohno, was no slouch. At 2:40 and on you can hear the influence.
