Where can one go for an unbaised primer on the history behind the Syrian conflict?

First, I think that the further back in time one goes the more likely all parties are to admit unpleasant truths of what their sides did.

I have only a vague understanding about Syria and Israel and that has to do with the funding of Hezbollah by Syria and the contested Golan Heights.

Where do I go to get accurate background on this?

The root of conflict in the Middle East is the battle between the herders and the growers; When agriculture first started, the people who grew crops were in constant conflict over land. Herders wanted free access for their animals to roam; growers wanted to fence in their land so that the animals didn't eat or trample the crops.

Basically there has been fighting in the region ever since. The motivations have changed, but conflict has never gone away, and old grudges have always been as important to the belligerents as their claimed current motivations.

The conflicts even pre-date (and became enshrined in) the local Abrahamic religions - In Genesis, God takes sides with the meat eating herders, whose burnt offerings are allegedly more pleasing to his nostrils than those of the plant eating growers. The region has a history of old grudges that extends back beyond the beginning of history itself.

Fascinating stuff. Don't suppose there's a book that goes into detail on this.

I believe if you go to the Kremlin website, you'll get the clear and unbiased story about how it's all because of how evil America is.

Or you could just read the copy and pastes from that site which some people post here.

You'll need to start around 1900, with the decline of the Ottoman Empire, going through WW1, which is when the modern boundaries of the middle eastern nations started to be drawn by the European powers.

You'd probably be better off with something like "Who Wrote the Bible" by Richard Elliot Freidman which will explain Genesis, and "who's side god was on, rather than the nonsense Bilby came out with

I think you will need a weekend pass to the CIA archives...

Take what the US says, what Russia says, put it in a blender. Puree for ten minutes. Pour the concoction down the drain.

Then ask Barbos in PMs. Delete those PMs.

You could then ask me, but I really am not anywhere near an authority on the subject. All I know is that Russia has a vested interest in Syria's border with the Sea. The US... well, the US has been trying to "help" the Middle East for a while now. We know how that has gone. Assad was nice enough to let the CIA torture terror suspects in Syria for a bit during our war of Enduring Freedom.

In other words... read a few books on this terribly complicated situation.

Yeah, but you will probably need a plumber to repair the hole in your drain afterwards. Better off taking it to a waste disposal site...

And one should also get the input from Qatar, SA, Israel, Iran, and Turkey and get a bigger blender...

How many sides are there in this?

The US is always looking to have influence if not control of governments. Presently the Syrian government is close to Russia, not the US.

So the US is supporting this group or that, bombing every now and then, and hoping to get some control when it is over.

But you have ISIS involved too. That's where it started, and ISIS ultimately wants to unite Syria and Iraq.
