Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

No Way Up

Saw this on Hulu. It's kind of a remake of Airport 2, but with sharks added in. It's kind of campy and not as horrible as it sounds. Then again, I watched it at around 3 in the morning because I'm having trouble sleeping these days, but it didn't put me to sleep, so that's good?

If you like movies about crashing airplanes that sink into the ocean while a few survivors unrealistically escape, and others get eaten by sharks conducting themselves in the exact opposite way that they do in nature, then this is the movie for you.

Bonus Content: I also watched The Babadook, but it's been well covered. If you haven't seen it by now, you should.

Conclave
Not sure what to say that would not be a spoiler.
Kind of felt like a Dan Brown novel.
Great acting!
7/10

Well sure, but by the time the 7th monkey had jumped off the bed and bumped their head, it really has jumped the shark.

Silent Partner 7/10

This stars Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer and Susannah York in a crime caper/thriller where Gould plays a bank employee trying to game bank robber Plummer out of his modest take. I've heard about this movie for many years as an unsung gem, and I would agree. Liked the style and performances and the jazzy score.

There is some jarring violence and titillating nudity if that helps. And it's free on Kanopy.

Oh and it can count as a Christmas movie.

Oh and it can count as a Christmas movie.
In the same way that Die Hard can count as a Christmas movie; Or in the same way that Santa Claus Conquers the Martians can count as a Christmas movie?
I can't even joke about Santa Clause Conquers the Martians being a nostalgic trip back to my childhood. At seven years old I knew it was an abomination.

Cuckoo.

This one had some hype in the horror community, so I was looking forward to seeing it.

Long story short: emo girl goes to the Bavarian Alps in Germany with her dad, stepmother, and half sister. There are over the top creepy and unlikeable people everywhere, including the protagonist emo girl. It's unclear as to exactly why the family went all the way to Germany to buy a resort that seemed utterly bereft of clientele, but whatever, maybe I missed something.

Anyway, the movie revolves around medical experiments and conspiracy, but eventually becomes an exercise in drawn out silliness.

It had a couple of twists and turns, but the biggest one you could see coming a mile away.

Horror Scale: 6/10
Non-horror Scale: 5/10

I saw it as part of a series on Worst Movies Ever Made.

It's definitely in the "so bad, it's good" category.

I truly appreciate movies that are so bad they're good, but IMO, not even MST3K could salvage that piece of celluloid excrement.

We just started our holiday movie extravaganza, during which we watch movies that we've seen many times and have on DVD. We are starting with the original version of "Bedazzled", made in 1967. it's hilarious. Gotta go watch it now.

SynopsisStanley Moon (Dudley Moore) is a bumbling short-order cook, infatuated with Margaret (Eleanor Bron), the statuesque waitress he works with at Wimpy Burger in London. On the verge of suicide, he meets George Spiggott (Peter Cook), the devil, who, in return for his soul, grants him seven wishes to woo the challenging Margaret. Despite the wishes and the advice of the Seven Deadly Sins, including Lilian Lust (Raquel Welch), Stanley can't seem to win his love and shake the meddling Spiggott.

Black Swan

Synopsis: timid, but talented ballerina wins the part of the Swan in The Black Swan, which requires her to play two roles, the White Swan and the Black Swan. However, she struggles to take on the Black Swan persona to the degree that she needs to.

Having no healthy support from anyone, and under immense pressure, she eventually goes insane. Anything more would spoil it for those who haven't seen it.

It's filmed well, acted well, and well written for the most part. It's tragic, intense, and there's almost zero letup.

Somewhere along the line though, it misses the boat a little. I can't put my finger on exactly why though. It's like taking a shower and the water gets warm enough, but not as hot as you'd like... or something.

It's still a good film though and definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

7/10

True Romance

I hadn't seen this in a good decade or so. It still holds up really well. See it if you haven't.

As an aside, it's sad that movies like this can't get made anymore. It's too big of a risk. Matt Damon provided some insight into why staple mid budget flicks don't get made anymore. He said that even if the movie didn't do so great at the box office, they still had the DVD sales to make up for the lack of box office income. Also, societal shifts simply wouldn't tolerate the freedom to put anything on the table that the writers and filmmakers wanted. True Romance is a great example of that.

Rented based on the cast alone and done so while sitting on the pot. What a great time to be alive.

This is a great movie with a great cast. Christian Slater is an underrated actor in my opinion but maybe his personal life keeps him from getting better roles.

The Lincoln Lawyer, 8/10; Starring Mathew McConaughy and Marisa Tomei in a legal drama/thriller. The plot involves a lawyer set up to defend the son of a wealthy Los Angeles real estate broker who has viciously assaulted a prostitute. Great performances from the cast, the plot twists hold up well. Based on the Michael Connelly book who also wrote the Bosch detective novels and filmed in Los Angeles, good stuff.

The Lincoln Lawyer tv series is also pretty good.
