DALLAS — After church on a recent Sunday, Emily Mooney smiled as she told her girlfriends about her public act of rebellion. She had slapped a “Beto for Senate’’ sticker on her S.U.V. and driven it to her family’s evangelical church.
But then, across the parking lot, deep in conservative, Bible-belt Texas, she spotted a sign: the same exact sticker supporting Beto O’Rourke, the Democrat who is challenging Senator Ted Cruz.
“I was like, who is it?” she exclaimed. “Who in this church is doing this?”
Listening to Ms. Mooney’s story, the four other evangelical moms standing around a kitchen island began to buzz with excitement. All of them go to similarly conservative churches in Dallas. All are longtime Republican voters, solely because they oppose abortion rights. Only one broke ranks to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016. But this November, they have all decided to vote for Mr. O’Rourke, the Democratic upstart who is on the front line of trying to upend politics in deep-red Texas.
In the Senate race, one of the most unexpectedly tight in the nation, any small shift among evangelical voters — long a stable base for Republicans — could be a significant loss for Mr. Cruz, who, like President Trump, has made white evangelicals the bulwark of his support.

Perhaps more white evangelical women are coming to their senses and will vote in more Dems in the midterms. This is why I try never to make generalizations about any group of people.

Whatever the reason, this is good news for November. (But you are far more charitable than I)

Six months ago, Beto's campaign was regarded as quixotic, a nod to propriety doomed to fail.

He's been kicking ass ever since, and though I don't agree with everything he says, I will most likely vote for him, because we need a change here and in DC both.

They voted for Trump, so Cruz is a cakewalk.

It's probably because both of my parents were evangelicals and they always voted for Democrats, even when their idiot pastor told them to vote for Republicans. I used to try and convince my mother to tell her minister that it was inappropriate to tell the congregation how to vote, but she hated any type of conflict so she just did what she thought was right without telling anyone. That is why I have a little hope that at least some of the female evangelicals will do the right thing when they vote. I'm pretty sure that their are more women like the ones in the article. Women need to reach out to each other and find common ground, so we can destroy the patriarchy. :D;) That sentence is for somebody that has a habit of posting anti feminist rants. But, I am serious that women need to stop judging each other and instead accentuate what we have in common, not what separates us.

Beto is a very charismatic figure. Like or not it takes that type of personality to win elections. There is a rather arrogant Republican from New Jersey that frequently makes comments on the NYTimes website. He posted yesterday that if he lived in Texas, he'd vote for Beto, just because he can't stand Cruz. One can only hope that a lot of Texans feel the same way and that will motivate them to get out of vote for Beto. I guess we will know soon.

Ted and Beto were scheduled for a televised town hall style debate. Cruz just dropped out so Beto is going to use the television time to make his pitch to voters.

Cruz probably decided to go lick Bonespurs balls instead facing Beto.

That's where the crossover support is coming from in my opinion. The Kennedy Effect. Beto is highly charismatic. Cruz is highly not.

The woman who said she voted for Hillary is probably the exception, and is voting from an ideological place. And maybe there are some Texas Republican women who have finally realized that Trump and the Republicans don't give a shit about them. But I suspect that most just find Beto more appealing than Cruz, and will go straight back to voting pure Republican next cycle.

But as I said... whatever their reason... as long as Beto wins :D

Beto is really really really good at thinking on his feet. I've listened to a number of his town hall meetings. He would destroy Cruz. I suspect Cruz knows it and that is why he cancelled.
