This is where this whole nonsense began:

The other guy is Nigerian and a scientist. He just says flat out that he doesn't think he's been the target of racism in Denmark. When angry people yell "nigger" at him, he doesn't register that as racism. Just somebody trying really hard to use hurty words.

Angry people (plural) are yelling "nigger" at him, but he has chosen not to think of it as those people being racist. Ok, well, I guess, good for him to be comfortable living in denial like that, or to try to give those people the benefit of the doubt, but from the description provided, that is not a group of friends or family joking around. That--to me, at least--indicates strangers (plural) calling a black man a nigger.

Absent any additional context--which is why I kept asking for additional context--that is people being racist and your friend being the target of racism, regardless of what your friend "registers" it as, so perhaps you could simply clarify the matter by asking your friend if he was talking about total strangers calling him a nigger, or if he ment people who knew him using the term in a gallows humor kind of way (like with your ex's family, assuming they're Jewish), because as it stands--angry strangers calling a black man a nigger--is racism cut and dried.
