Who did it better?

A few version of California Dreamin are out there.

I like the Freischwimmer version which may be familiar with the Star Trek viewers.

Slippery People by Talking Heads and the Staple Singers

Fleetwood Mac v Harry Styles

I don't think Harry Styles released the song for sale and it was just a tune he picked for the BBC show but Harry did an incredible job. The Harry version doesn't really deviate much from the original Fleetwood Mac arrangement but Harry is vocally flying solo so his version doesn't have the same vocal effect as Buckingham and Nicks has.

A great job by Harry but Fleetwood Mac win all the way.

Peter Gabriel v Harry Styles (and his band?)

A classic 80s song with a superb video. There is a lot to admire about the Harry Styles version, mainly the super cute drummer who was killing it but Harry doesn't really do anything different to the song. Harry is a great performer but Peter Gabriel gets the win.

It's blasphemy to say PG is in second place.

And you're right. The drummer is a hottie.

Tommy James and The Shondells v rock legend Billy Idol

The sound of the sixties is just has a certain carefree vibe to it that is hard to describe. Billy Idol doesn't really do anything radical to the song but does add the Billy Idol rock and roll pazzazz and his showmanship. As much as I like the sixties version I think Bill Idol cleans up the rough edges of a great sixties recording and improves on the original.

Absolutely. (y)

In one of those strange coincidences of life, Tommy James and the Shondells had two cover songs of theirs on the pop charts during the same week in 1987. Mony Mony by Billy Idol and I Think We're Alone Now by Tiffany.

My favoriteTJ&tS song is Crystal Blue Persuasion. Great video too.

Speaking of Tommy James, I was surprised listening to his Crimson and Clover, how laid back it was, despite all the waa-waa and effects. It's one of my favorite songs from the sixties.

Joan Jett's versiion has better production values I guess and is harder hitting.

I prefer the original.

Ann Peebles v Paul Young

What a great song performed by two fantastic singers. The Paul Young version is very different to the original. So different that it doesn't really compare to the original so both songs stand out on their own.

Paul Young takes on Marvin Gaye.

Paul Young creates his own standout version of the song Where Ever I lay My Hat.
