One of my more extreme leftist FB friends has been telling people for over a year that the Trump candidacy was a put-up by the Donald and Bill Clinton, designed to ensure another Democratic presidency... now I am wondering if that might indeed be the case.
MSNBC this morning - flaunting banner "Will Trump Abandon the Race?" or something like that.
One way or another, something has to give; the mighty battleship USS Trump is grounded on a massive reef of their own garbage, and is under attack from all sides. Trump is losing and he hates to lose, so I half expect him to announce that he won't participate in this "rigged election" any longer. I usually check the Predictit site to see what the sentiment is, but they're not offering any bets on this yet.
What do y'all think?

It might be something akin to a stunt pilot who has pushed the plane a little too far and can't pull of the nose-first dive he thought he could pull off. IOW, Trump can't quit now. Maybe his plan was just to go in, say a bunch of shit, get a lot of publicity, and then he'd go back to being on TV for a living. Then, as his poll numbers went up, maybe he started feeling it, and with what we know about him, actually came to believe that he could win it.

But now he might understand on some reptilian level that he's in deep shit, but it's too late. I think we were all wondering when the real scrutiny would start, and now just days after the conventions are over the heat has been turned way up and he's wilting like fragile little turd blossom in the sun.

He certainly didn't think this election could ruin him, but it's probably going to. He still has to face that fraud case, which he will most likely lose (he'll probably settle it up as quietly as possible), and the scorn that's going to be heaped on him for this campaign is going to follow him for the rest of what is hopefully a very short rest of his life.

All of this, except I don't wish his life short, merely powerless.
I think he'll stay in because he is not capable of walking away from the limelight.
Also I think his kids will turn on him and each other when that scorn starts to be heaped. I don't think they can abide having a publicly derided father.

Nothing would surprise me at this point. The last three days have been critically ill for his campaign. His public and very visible statements about the baby, fire marshall, and the Khans, his defense of Ailes, then add his spokesperson blaming the Hindenburg disaster on Obama... You know, in 2012, any one of those things would have led to the demise of a candidate. But for Trump, it is business as usual, except for the concentration of these things, all lumped up together. They are coming one after the other. On another board, a Trump supporter said he was having trouble defending what Trump is doing/saying again and again.

I wouldn't generally expect Trump to drop out until his polling numbers collapse to below 30%. But, like I said, I wouldn't be surprised by anything at this point. We know he doesn't want the job, just the victory. If he isn't likely to win, he may skip out, and isn't like he is going to worry about burning bridges. Everything up to now has been unprecedented, so predictions seem impossible, other than it does look like Trump losing is a sure bet.

It isn't his fault. The entire system is rigged. He was going to change it all, but the press was unfairly attacking him left and right and he needed to think of his family.

It is pretty telling, that I actually would have to look up the fire marshal and Hindenburg to know whether or not you are spreading manure or not. With Trump recognizing a POE has gotten pretty tough...

Yaah, if this really is Trump's Joe McCarthy moment relative to the Khan family, I could see him quitting in some fashion at some point blaming on a rigged system or some mix with that... And, I also think his poll numbers would have to go into the dirt first.

Absolute pipedream.

Trump's ego now thinks he can pull it off and it will keep him from backing out.

He's already gotten heaps of scorn and that hasn't budged him or caused him to reconsider not one iota.

Remember, this is the guy who has screaming supporters no matter what he says or does. You see them everywhere. This is the guy who said he could 'shoot someone in the streets' and not lose any support. His poll numbers back him up.

The only thing left that may shake some reasonable people from his side are the debates. They are his moment of truth. He HAS to shine. If he tries to weasel out of them, he's done. If he falls on his face and starts making excuses for his ignorance, he's done.

Anyone who thinks anything bothers Trumpty Dumpty seriously needs one of those reality checks. It's nice to pretend, but lots and lots and lots of unthinking, emotionally driven voters love this shit. Think middle school, folks.

There was that Seinfeld episode where George did the opposite of what he thought was the right thing to do. I think that's Trump's campaign strategy.

Not just them. The top story on ABCNews.com right now is Senior GOP Officials Exploring Options if Trump Drops Out.

As soon as I saw his "rigged election" claims I suspected he was setting up his withdrawal. He entered the race as a publicity stunt to drum up more attention and his ego wouldn't let him let go when it got out of hand. Quitting now and blaming others for conspiring against him rather than getting trounced in November would be a way to save face (at least in his own mind).

Absolute pipedream.

Nightmare, actually. I've thought since day one that Trump was God's gift to the Democrats - who else could possibly LOSE to HRC? If Trump dropped out today there might still be time to put someone relatively sane in place, but as days go by... less and less chance of that.

Anyhow, there appears to be a pretty broad spread of opinions on this from the forum. The stunt pilot analogy seems apt to me, except that stunt pilots are generally courageous. Trump would bail out and let the plane crash into the crowd, if he could. Whether that's possible remains to be seen.

Yeh - that.

I do not think he will drop out. It may well be that as the election comes nigh, many people start going with Clinton because Trump is obviously an unstable, dangerous kook. As he realizes he will lose, he will go over the top, and start getting weird. He'll no longer care. His way so far has been to be outrageous and loud, and it has so far worked. He will revert to what has worked in a last minute over the top blitz of outrageous balderdash. It may well be the weirdest end of election cycle yet. Despair and panic. He won't go quietly.

In his campaign Trump has insulted/alienated/pissed off just about every demographic except the extreme right wing. If he drops out, and the rumors that he was a Clinton plant takes hold among them, then will there be anyone in the country who doesn't hate Trump? He might have to leave the country.

If they pulled this off then they should be crowned Supreme Overlords of the United States and all the Canadias.

If so, I would welcome the return of the Kings and worship at their genius feet.

What about Mexico? I'm sick of you people discriminating against Mexicans! :p

Man, Trump is the proverbial bull in the GOP's china shop. He's going to wreck the party and god knows what will happen with the rest of the party's elections this year.

While one can be sure that the initial rationale for his candidacy had to do with raising his brand awareness for marketing purposes and he had no desire to actually become President, he's kind of in for the long haul at this point. He managed to tap into the angry base better than anyone else and has ridden it as far as it can be ridden. He realizes now that the winds are against him and he's probably going to lose, but by laying the groundwork for how a loss is the fault of everyone except him, he can keep up the demagoguery for a few more years post-election and cash in on the Waffle House lecture circuit complaining about how America is once again under the thumb of a tyrant who wasn't elected legitimately.

I think you are giving Trump too much credit for wrecking the GOP. The GOP wrecked itself with its platform of hate and paranoia over the last 15-20 years. Trump's nomination is but a symptom of the much deeper disease.

I don't think it is, but it probably should be. He hasn't done a single thing to attract any new support, from voters or from the Republican party.

This^ is definitely a possibility. The saying, "You go with what you know" is simple but true. When I was in the army I learned what to do when you're caught in a close ambush on foot---you just charge at it with as much firepower as you can muster. But then I retrained as a cav scout--an armored unit--and on my first training exercise as the squad leader, we got caught in an ambush, but it was from another armored unit a good 400 meters away. So what did I do? I immediately ordered the entire squad of APCs and one Bradley to turn hard right and charge the position that had caught us out in the open.

We were all "killed" within minutes. The de-brief questioning was predictable: "what's with the suicide charge?"

So it seems likely that indeed, Trump will flame out with his own ignorant, misguided suicide charge.
