It is worth remembering that after their loss in 2012 with Mittens the Pander-Bear at the helm, the GOP officially did a bit of self-reflection. The report told them in no uncertain terms that the path they were on was a dead end, and they needed to make some serious changes in order to remain competitive. Move to the center. Appeal to younger voters/people of color/other minorities and basically stop being the party of "the 1950s were awesome and we need to go back to that!"

Now? The "TEA Party" folks are considered "RINOs." The "moderates" were purged from the party over a decade ago, and now - to the RNC leadership - Liz fucking Cheney is a "radical leftist."

They are fully geared up for minority rule, by playing hardball with every weakness and stress point in our laws and boy, are we seeing those weaknesses, most especially in election laws. America, the laboratory of democracy as my high school civics teacher called it, needs an overhaul, but of course fixing the system is something the Repubs would resist with all their might.
A new theme, coming through loud and clear in Republican shop talk and stump speeches, is that we are not a democracy at all. They've seized on 'republic' as their defining term.
Loren Culp, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in Washington state, gave the updated MAGA take on all this: "Democracy is mob rule...famous Chinese leaders like Mao Zedong and <sic> Mikhail Gorbachev loved democracy, because democracy is a step toward socialism, which is a step toward communism."

In other words, America needs to be run by strong leaders whose principles are the right principles. We have those principles. Those who oppose us are -- yes -- the Enemy Within. Our Chosen Leader has said that the National Guard and the army can 'easily' put them down. Trump has said that Liz Cheney -- in his eyes, the worst of traitors -- should face a televized military tribunal, or maybe, just figuratively, folks, nine guns aimed at her head. In the meantime, Trump will 'protect' all women, directing their lives "whether they like it or not. I'm going to protect them."
They're going to wave the Bible at us and launch attack after attack on voting rights, reproductive rights, free speech and freedom to assemble. It's going to become more explicit as they gain confidence in their methods, and no one should expect them to change and redefine themselves. Incredibly, they've turned neo-fascism into a very competitive American model.

What is the GOP without Trump? Who remains if they don't win this one? People in my family who supported Reagan could reasonably be referred to as "classic" conservative, but have now been radicalized. Anyone not on board with Trump is an abomination. So who are these people going to vote for once he's gone (hopefully he'll be gone)?

Ideally this will be the downfall of American conservatism as it exists today. When you tell people the elections are rigged and then you lose, it likely discourages your demographic from showing up at all in future elections. Also, when you have a cult of personality, it loses all momentum when the leader is eliminated.

If Harris wins the election, and assuming power will be transferred appropriately, the Republican party may never fully recover. Awful and ignorant people will still exist, but they won't have the enthusiasm they do now.

Short of violence/terrorism, how much further right can they go? Would it be candidates actually outright campaigning on e.g. terminating the Constitution and replacing it with whatever they claim biblical principles are?

Along racial lines, I suppose the KKK and similar organizations could be become more GOP mainstream than they already have become in recent years.

I'm guessing they'll make a pit stop at violence/terrorism, and go from there. Remember, January 6th was not a spontaneous event. It was a dry run. I'm certain that folks on the right have been studying the "game film" of that day and trying to figure out what can be done better the next time. The only saving grace we have this time is that Trump isn't President and can't leverage the power of the White House to try and overturn the results. He can't call out (or fail to call out) the National Guard, or order the military to help him stage a photo op.

With any luck the Democrats will take the House and Speaker Jeffries will be holding the gavel when it comes time to do the ceremonial counting 'o the votes.

In any case where Trump loses, we can pretty much guarantee that some of his followers will turn violent.

Truth be told the government was set up to be like that from the beginning. When its convenient for the rulers to use as a method to get what they want they claim democracy this, democracy that. When the general population wants or doesn't want something out of line with elite thinking then all of a sudden we are a republic and not a direct democracy, the courts can declare law for us, ect.

Governance is never perfect. Electing leaders makes sense as it helps the people be involved and gives the Government a reason to care about what the people want. It is far from perfect, big money always bumps ahead of the line. But having the top administrators selected makes sense as there really is no other way to choose other than letting the aristocracy chose amongst themselves. We saw that didn't have the best track record.

Judges, sheriffs... that is micromanaging. I hate the idea of voting for judges or county engineers. I'm not qualified for judges (technically I am for engineers). But why in the world would we make that a partisan position?

If he looses then he will become even more unraveled than he is now. He is likely to call for all kinds of lawsuits to overturn the results, but will he get anyone to pay for them this time? After all, he has quite a few cases against him that are going to move forward, taking up his time and money.

The leadership of the GOP will be glad to be rid of him. They will make noise of support, but it will grow fainter as the courts move forward. The business donors will see that backing trumpers is not giving them what they want, and move back to more sane corrupt options. The religious extremists donors are harder to call. Will they continue to back nutcases that promise to give them what they want, but will fail, or go for the sane ones that will only give them incremental gains with a better chance of success? The true believers, some will use violence, but as more of them end up getting caught and put in prison for it, others will become all talk and no action. They will hang their trump flag next to their confederate flag, talk about the glories of both and how they will rise again.

We will still have the SCOTUS causing problems for a generation, unless some of the conservatives on there start retiring. They might be encouraged to do so with some court reforms, but good luck getting that through congress.
