Meanwhile, back in FLA.

Although details are still missing, social media updates are coming in, including one from WPLG that shows video of students scattering out of the school. Some students and staff are still reportedly locked inside.

The Margate Fire Rescue has deemed this a mass-casualty incident, which means at least 20 people have been injured. There is still no update on how many casualties there may be.

I would say maybe if lawmakers were shot, but lawmakers have been shot and still no one does shit. So this is the new normal and kids can be killed wholesale.

Numerous fatalities are being stated. We lost. That simple. The NRA won, we lost, and all of the mass murder victims are are lost.

But you know... terrorism and shit. We need to stay on top of that.

Do these stories even make Americans blink anymore? It seems there is a new one every other week down there.

Up here we had one big one... in 1989.

Gave up after Sandy Hook.

Why?

The Onion posted an article that merely quoted the NRA’s quick response after the massacre of elementary school children.

At that point, I realized there was no hope. Just need to hope our kids don’t go to *that school* in the future.

You think about it, the labor, the late nights, the general pain in the ass that is raising children... all to end like slamming a car into a bridge pier in part because the gun lobby successfully neutered reasonable gun restraints in the US.

Fuck the NRA and their bleating base.

CBS reporting now 17 dead, gunman captured, used an AR 15.

A co-worker's niece was one of the injured. Another co-worker, his son's friend was there but not injured thankfully.

17 dead including at least 1 teacher, at least 3 more still in critical condition plus 3 more in stable condition at Broward Health North (not the only hospital taking patients from this shooting).

A lot of students still at the school and not yet reunited with their parents.

Gunman arrested. He's 19 years old, a former student who was expelled for behavioral problems last year. Per local reports, he had an obsession with guns.

Earlier reports said he set off the school's fire alarm to cause the students to come into the hallways before he started shooting. He fully intended to kill as many people as possible.

After he left the school, he shot 2 or 3 people on the street and was reportedly heading to the nearby middle school.

These are the messages one local girl received from her sister who is a student at Douglas H.S. Her sister is safe, but the terror she was feeling is palpable in her messages.

That’s 8 school shootings resulting in death or injury this year apparently. It’s early February- that’s mad.

I can’t even get shocked, or angry, or upset anymore. The whole thing is the new normal. I’m numb.

This from a bible-bashing conservative forum on the topic:

far right nutter said:
Schools are soft targets: the students are sitting ducks, and armed response is minutes away. Armed personnel -- security guards and school staff -- would mitigate much of this.

And this:

another far right nutter said:
Guns have been easily available in this country for 300 years. Only recently has there been an uptick in school shootings.

*For the sarcastically impaired the following is said in jest*

The problem is obviously easy access to guns.

What’s the point in discussing it with these people anymore. They have a name for gun control advocates, used not in jest: ‘gun-grabbing-ghouls’

Fuck me. Don’t know you or those girls, but I hope they’re safe now.

It's actually pissing me off that the media covers it. Why bother any longer? I watched a few moments of MSNBC and I'm getting the helicopter view of law enforcement vehicles driving down the road. Why? Still doing this let's dedicate every moment of the news to this for the day shit. Why! To what end?

Is Fox trotting out the teachers with guns shit again?

Interesting (slightly related) story on the nuttery you have to do with regarding gun control: a state, pro gun politician couldn't get a fake gun ban passed for public schools in Louisiana because it was deemed a liberal plot and a threat to the 2nd amendment (starts on Act 2):

www.thisamericanlife.org/637/words-you-cant-say

This current shooting will change nothing other than increase the sales of firearms.

The big issues aside.

I'm no expert on how to get kids to safety but, I see photos on the news of the kids all walking in a straight line with hands on the sholders of the person in front.

Really? Seems to me either hide or scatter and run. All in a line like that?

This was after police had cleared portions of the school, and are bringing the students out. They do it this way to make sure the gunman is not trying to escape by blending in with the students. If it was "hide, scatter and run" it is easier for the shooter to escape in the chaos.

Heard a GOPer talking about mental health issues needing to be addressed. Can’t help but think here are lots of people with mental health issues NOT shooting up schools. What’s different? They don’t have guns.

At this point I would be happy to give up all my guns if it meant we could get a ban so that criminals would not have such easy access.

This is really insane...

One of the teachers was just being interviewed by Rachel Maddow, and she was describing what happened for her and her students (all safe). Towards the end of the interview, she mentioned that the school actually has "active shooter" drills (just like another type of fire drill). They have detailed emergency plans and code words for shooters and bomb threats. She said that, at first, they all thought it was an unannounced "active shooter" drill. She credits all of the planning and drills for the fact that *only* 17 people died today.

What kind of fucked up country do I live in that we have to have "active shooter" drills in our schools because the fucking gun nuts and NRA-money-taking politicians are too fucking insane to allow any kind of gun controls.

The blood of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of innocent children. If s it's natural manure.

The only alternative is to let Hillary amd Obama steal your guns so they'll be able to force you into a gay marriage and then the terrorists win.

Oddly, my kids high school has had on the calendar for weeks that tomorrow is "active shooter drill day".

Yes the U.S. is fucked up and too many people are too brainwashed, greedy or stupid to notice.

I disagree with that. If there's an active shooter at your school, attacking him with a drill is one of the least effective actions you can take, even if you spend an entire day practicing.
