DeSantis Flies Immigrants to Martha Vineyard

The victims were first told that they were going to Boston, but they were told during the flight that they were going to Martha's Vineyard.
In line with what AZ and TX have done, DeSantis said they each signed a waiver and were given a map of Martha's Vineyard.

Lying to get someone to sign a waiver makes the waiver invalid.

Migrants who were last week flown to Martha’s Vineyard were allegedly given a brochure containing lies about the benefits they could expect to receive in Massachusetts, according to a report. Around 50 Venezuelan and Colombian people were flown on two planes from Florida to the popular vacation spot last Wednesday, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis taking credit for what he trollishly termed the “relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations.” Amid previous reports that the migrants were misled about where they were going or what they could expect upon arrival, Popular Information on Monday published images of a brochure which was allegedly given to the migrants who agreed to board the flights. The document, which was reportedly sourced by a legal organization representing 30 of the migrants, claims arrivals in Massachusetts can expect “8 months cash assistance,” “assistance with housing,” “food,” “job placement,” and other benefits. The benefits described are in fact only available to specially designated refugees, and not migrants currently in the process of seeking asylum.

Every program listed on that flyer is legit for refugees. It’s really easy to check.

They were promised a flight to Massachusetts. They got it.

Amanda Marcotte for Salon: Of course DeSantis flouts the law and human decency — He's just following Trump's example | Salon.com - "Some Republicans see DeSantis as a cleaned-up Trump. But their contempt for the rule of law is exactly the same"

She then tweeted Amanda Marcotte on Twitter: "The GOP commentariat ..." / Twitter
The GOP commentariat wants to believe that DeSantis is how they get Trump without all the scandal-mongering. But his willingness to use taxpayer dollars for human trafficking shows there is no such thing as a corruption-free fascism.

Because DeSantis is a robot whose only programming command is right wing grievance, the GOP establishment thinks he'll be free of Trump's tendency to commit crimes because he's a greedy grifter. But DeSantis just has a different set of goals that lead him to flout the law.

I have no doubt that the Harvard Law-educated DeSantis was well aware that defrauding and functionally kidnapping people is illegal, even if you do eventually release them. But he learned from Trump well: Our system is ill-equipped to hold politician-criminals accountable.

DeSantis also has nothing but contempt for the First Amendment, and is waging a war on free speech across Florida.

The Martha's Vineyard stunt wasn't even the first time this month DeSantis exploited people for a political stunt by defrauding them. He's gotten 20 people arrested for "illegal" voting, even though the state told them they had a right to vote.

DeSantis has a different strategy for shielding himself from consequence than Trump, to be sure. But they share a contempt for rule of law and an eagerness to impress their fascist supporters with abuse of power.
He made the media and Dems talk about a subject they desparately want to avoid.
LOL

Don't be obtuse. They were promised more than a flight to Massachusetts, and you know it. They were led to believe that they would be taken care of, but the opposite turned out to be true. As for being given a map of Martha's Vineyard--if that happened, it was only after they had been duped into getting onto the aircraft and taking off. The people who got them to Massachusetts then disappeared when they got to the destination. This is pretty obviously criminal fraud, and there may be other federal crimes and state laws that were violated.

This may not reach the levels of human trafficking but it definitely appears to be kidnapping.

Legally it is both.

What labor or sex act was DeSantis seeking? If we're gonna get this idiot we'd better just get him instead of hyperbolizing an already insane situation to give republicans their usual serving of "look over there! The liberals are wrong".

The "service" was to be filmed for a political stunt. :)

Amanda Marcotte on Twitter: "It is a minor thing, ...." / Twitter
It is a minor thing, but so telling that the only person DeSantis seems to talk to when he doesn’t have to is his wife.

My google-fu is failing me (maybe someone can find it?) but I remember reading an interview with a DeSantis aide who says that, when they're traveling, he doesn't talk or read or do anything to pass the time. Just stares into space. That's.....yeah.

It's telling that the best way to rise in the GOP ranks is to have severe personality disorders. Not sure what that one is. Trump's sociopathy drives him to be easily bored and to chatter all the time. DeSantis is something else.
Extreme introversion?
Like that Austrian corporal.

They are all fascist right wing authoritarians. "Hitler" is often used as the standard bearer for fascist authoritarianism because he showed the world the logical consequences of fascist authoritarianism. If our American fascist authoritarians gain power again, they will do their level best to take the United States in the same direction.

Well played DeSantis, exposing the gross hypocrisy of the wokesters. So much clutching at pearls :hysterical:

There a number of issues here.

1) lying to migrants firstly to get them to agree to be moved
2) not telling anyone these people are being intentionally displaced elsewhere

Though I'm sure, if DeSantis dropped off migrants in California at your address, you'd be laughing just as much .

I spent all weekend in cockeyed wonder at how smoothly the wingnut propaganda machine kicked into high gear. Clearly, the governors of Texas and Florida concocted this inhumane scheme to traffic asylum seekers from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard in a transcontinental semi-kidnapping "Own the Libs" stunt. (That a video crew was invited along for the ride was sort of the giveaway.) When the people on the Vineyard killed it with kindness in front of god and the world, that the whole thing had flopped didn't present so much as a speed bump to the MAGAmind. When the migrants were moved to an existing Massachusetts emergency facility at Joint Base Cape Cod—on a directive from the state’s Republican Governor, Charlie Baker—where they would be more comfortable and would have access to immigration lawyers and an ICE office, the puke funnel went into overdrive. From WBUR:

The base, which the state has previously designated an emergency shelter, will offer dormitory-style spaces, with separate spots to accommodate families or individuals. The administration said families will not be separated. The base will also feature space for migrants to find other resources like legal services, health care, crisis counseling and translators. “We are grateful to the providers, volunteers and local officials that stepped up on Martha’s Vineyard over the past few days to provide immediate services to these individuals,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in the statement. “Our Administration has been working across state government to develop a plan to ensure these individuals will have access to the services they need going forward, and Joint Base Cape Cod is well equipped to serve these needs.”
“Dreams do come true,” Peter Pan warned us, “if only we wish hard enough.” Confronted by the obvious fact that the libs had not been owned in any way, and that the stunt had not worked, the keepers of the puke funnel pivoted instantly to pretending that it had. To listen to them and to follow them on the electric Twitter machine, you’d have thought the Eastern Elite Militia had rounded up the migrants at bayonet-point and hustled them off the island as quickly as possible rather than house them for longer than 24 hours, and HYPOCRISY!!!!!! Checkmate, libs!

It was completely bananas. There was actual video that showed that none of what the funnel was selling was remotely connected to the reality of the events in question.

Nobody worked harder at selling the fantasy than Tailgunner Ted Cruz who, at this point, has taken to trolling despite having absolutely no gift for the discipline. He had to pull down one tweet because he mistook Republican Gov. Charlie Baker for a Democrat. But the rest of his contributions to the discourse was taken directly from the movie running inside his brain. Here’s a sample:

They weren’t “illegal immigrants”; they were asylum seekers with a perfect right to be here. Second, the Guard was mobilized to prepare the facility at Joint Base Cape Cod; none of them were on the island. Cruz even quote tweeted an NBC News video that shows the migrants boarding the buses, hugging their temporary hosts on the Vineyard without a soldier in sight. But Cruz was confident that his preferred audience would see what he wanted them to see.
