Another Fucking Mass Shooting At US School

That's an excellent idea!

The MSU gunman who killed three students in a senseless spree on Monday should have been banned from buying guns after being charged with a felony in 2019 - but a woke prosecutor lowered the offense to a misdemeanor. Anthony McRae, 43, was arrested in 2019 for having a loaded gun without a concealed carry permit. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a felony which would have prevented him from buying or owning any other weapons if he'd been convicted. Instead, the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office - then run by Carol Siemon - lowered the offense to a misdemeanor.

Again - it's not the easy access to firearms - this time it's a "woke" prosecutor's fault.

It's illegal for a felon to own a gun. By being soft, the prosecutor let him avoid the felony. Not sure how this guy got his gun, but if the law had been enforced he couldn't have got it legally. Bad policy decisions have consequences.

Thanks to gun nut pressure, in some states, red flag laws have been weakened. Violent abusers of women SOs can have their guns. We cannot have backround checks to adequately close back round check loopholes. Gun nuts again. Washinton state. Law was proposed gun owners must have adequate safe storage of guns. The guns nuts shrieked and shrieked and shrieked until the spineless politicians gave in. Making sure burglers have an adequate supply of stolen guns to commit crimes with or sell to other criminals. And on and on it goes.

Red flag laws can be easily abused. They might help, and they might not. To say that this issue clear cut is incorrect.
We cannot have backround checks to adequately close back round check loopholes.
Where?
Washinton state. Law was proposed gun owners must have adequate safe storage of guns.
What is the obsession with policing the compliant? These guys are not the ones committing the gun crime.

Woke or not, the prosecutor's decision to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor sure makes it easier for a felon to buy a firearm. You are not in favor of restrictions?

Probably a plea bargain.

Parkland involved 17 dead people. MSU won't be as "big" of an issue because America has become desensitized to group murders less than 5. That is wickedly alarming! But still, props for injecting your race baiting politics into the murders of 3 college students.

My reaction was, at least it was a smaller number this time. That's how far my needle has been broken.

I don't know where you live.
Around here it's easy to access firearms. Maybe not strictly legal transactions.

But that's not a problem for someone who wants one and doesn't particularly care about laws that interfere with their personal freedom.

Red flag laws can be abused? So that is the excuse for the abuse of not having or enforcing good red flag laws? That is very much an abuse in itself.

Disclaimer in advance for viewers: I do not know everything (quite possibly anything) and I'm not trying to cover every single possible position when I post. Overthinking is not a thing this 49 year old wants to waste time doing. Just know that I appreciate feedback because you help cover ground I either didn't cover deliberately, overlooked or would not even think of.

With that said. To my knowledge, he was cooperative, plead guilty, was banned from having a gun while on probation and was on said probation for a year and a half. I'm not sure I would have complained about that prior to his recent crime. Problem is, if the community played a prominent role by letting authorities know he was illegally discharging the weapon at home, the prosecutor may have taken a different approach. It's why I've emphasized the importance of having a strong relationship with the community. A community that is protected by the police after speak up so that they aren't left vulnerable to retaliation. As well as one that can trust the police because they'd go after their own just as hard as they'd go after a civilian are key ways to earn the community's trust. The community's trust is required to help remove people like Anthony McRae & Nicolas Cruz and others from our communities with the bare minimum of information sharing.

This relationship will not be easy to achieved, because yes, anything said to law enforcement can be used as evidence against you. As such I believe another requirement is during the commission to provide evidence to law enforcement, civilians should be granted the equvilant of qualified immunity. Meaning that only information pertinent to the removal of suspects from society can be admissible in the court of law. All other information must be stricken from the record as well as incapable of being admissible in any future cases against anyone, period.

Here's another problem.
Michigan might have very strictly enforced red flag laws. But Lansing is only a couple hours drive from Indiana. McRae could have driven to East Chicago, IND., and back in a day.

It doesn't matter what the Ingram County authorities did or didn't do. Blaming this on Carol Sieman is ridiculous.

Around here they were doing that sort of thing because they simply didn't have the resources. IIRC there was a court decision about plea bargains and stripping gun rights that meant that the prosecutors simply didn't have the resources and took plea bargains to avoid crossing that threshold.

Don't get tough on crime if you won't fund the whole system. It's more than just putting cops on the street!

I'm not surprised. "Safe storage" is very often being used as a way of banning large number of people from having guns. Simply mandate gun safes heavy enough many people can't have them, presto, stealth gun ban. They're also often written to effectively preclude self defense use of a gun.

These days you'll rarely be wrong in thinking a proposed gun law is bad--the left only proposes stuff that goes way too far, the right only proposes stuff that goes way too far in the other direction. A middle ground barely exists.

There may be no causal relationshp between her decision not to charge the felony and this guy getting a gun. But it simply highlights that prosecutors are not pursuing one the basic way to reduce gun crime.
