They reported bird strike and the aircraft appeared to be under control until much later.

Their navigation was jammed before they were shot. They couldn’t land at the planned airport without instruments because of bad visibility and low ceilings. They requested to divert to an airport that was in VFR condition and were refused. They were shot while they were climbing again to return to the origin airport. They didn’t know they were shot until all their hydraulics failed and locked their control surfaces. That left them controlling the plane entirely with engine thrust which is damned hard and almost impossible to land.

It's not the kind of thing that can provoke a war.

An individual NATO member could, but would struggle to bring the rest of NATO along for the ride.

NATO was designed explicitly to avoid the kind of mutual obligation leading to war, that bedevilled the Great Powers in 1914.

If Russia wants war with NATO, the only way to get it is to attack a NATO member.

If a NATO member wants war with Russia, then they are on their own - The North Atlantic Treaty doesn't oblige members to join in to any war of agression.

Well, how else do we stop Russian Aggression? Asking dosn’t work. Trade dosnt work. Participation in sporting events doesn’t work. Mutual exploration into space doesn’t work.
