Progressiveness Gone Wild

Historically, “Ladies’ Nights” have been great for business.

The discounted drinks or meals tend to draw a large crowd of women, which in turn tends to draw more men — which then leads to packed bars and increased sales for the business.

But a family-run restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area is shutting down this week because it can’t afford to operate after it settled a “Ladies’ Night” discrimination lawsuit, CNN affiliate KGO reported last week. John Marquez, the chef and owner of Lima Restaurant in Concord, told the outlet that it hasn’t been able to bounce back after settling a lawsuit over a promotion that discounted drinks for women.

It’s not the first small business to be sued over a Ladies’ Night promotion due to technicalities in discrimination laws in certain states. The Unruh Civil Rights Act, a California law that dates back to 1959, says businesses can’t discriminate against religion, race and gender. A slew of lawsuits have since followed, and that has meant a sharp drop in the promotion.

Who is the wild progressive in this situation? The restaurant that gave women discounts? The nondiscrimination law lawmakers? Or whoever reportedly sued the restaurant?

Hopefully, the ladies night and the tradition of buying women drinks will die a merciful death. It just all sounds so strange in 2024 2025. Its like (paraphrased for truth), "Hey cutie, how about I buy you a date rape drug to impair your judgement, so we can go back to my house to shag." Oddly enough, an ex gf of mine thought that a man buying a lady a drink in the bar was a very classy thing to do. This was back in 1990 though.

But technically, yes, it is sexist and discriminatory. Imagine if they had "men's day" at the gas pumps, where men (only) could buy gas half off. Wouldn't fly. The "ladies night" lawsuit sounds like an abuse of a well intended law, though. We have had lawyers in my area who make a career out of going around suing businesses that are not in strict compliance with some, usually minor, aspect of the ADA law. Many small businesses can't easily comply with the requirements and have been driven out of business by these bastards. They ought to go to prison.
Actually, pretty much every day is men’s day.

Considering that women are still usually paid a bit less compared to men, often even when doing the same job, ;)
Women do not get paid less for the same job, when correcting for confounders such as hours worked or experience. That is a feminist canard that is unfortunately still explicitly believed.
maybe we should always get discounts in bars and in restaurants.
Well, female contraception is free, while male contraception isn't. And female hygiene products are tax-free in many places, nut male hygiene products are not. So women already get a lot of preferential treatment. Not to mention the sexist "selective service" registration.
I'll be surprised if our local sexist isn't here soon to talk about the injustices of allowing women to get cheap drinks on ladies nights.
Is anybody who disagrees with you on gender politics "a sexist"?
From what I recall, the men seemed to love that the women were getting cheap drinks.
Presumably the guys good-looking enough to pick up women at bars would. The policy of charging women's drinks less is still sexist though.
Or, it could be incels who resent not getting laid, so they take it out on women getting free or cheap drinks.
Another cheap insult. You are on a roll today. :rolleyesa:
Yes it is sexist but primarily it is a marketing strategy.

I personally have been told, baldly, to my face that women do not need to earn as much money as men and that I could not do a job that men were hired for; the female ‘equivalent’ paid substantially less. And I’ve seen, in person, men get promotions and pay raises for becoming a parent ( again) while women were penalized for giving birth. Not all pay differences are because of a chosen decision deference in hours worked.

Tell that to the men who went down on the Titanic, so the women & children could live. Or the hundreds of firemen who got burned and crushed to death on 9/11. Or the men who got their brains blown out defending this country, or came back severely disabled or with PTSD. Or the men who wade chest deep in urine, feces and used tampons daily trying to unclog blocked sewer lines. I could go on...

Thank you for stopping with your irrelevant examples to Toni’s observation that society is structured to favor men. That structure does not insure perfection in its goal, so the reality that bad things happen to men does not rebut her observation.

What a strange thread. The idea that people should have exactly equal rights on paper, even if that ends up favoring those who already possess substantial social privilege and shutting down businesses and organization that try to meet the needs of underserved populations? That's mainline liberalism, not progressivism. Progressives believe in a lot of different things, but all accept the necessity of social change, and are skeptical of any claim that social equity has somehow already been reached.

Women and children died on the Titanic. Women go to war and always have done, even when it meant disguising themselves as men in order to serve. Women come home from war with PTSD, with severe injuries, in caskets. Women are also firefighters and women who were firefighters died in the twin towers on 9/11--and elsewhere in the building, along with babies and young children and men who were not firefighters or rescue workers. Women are also plumbers, carpenters, electricians, police officers; they fly airplanes for the US government, for airlines and get this: for their own pleasure. Women have fought to step into those roles that you are castigating them for not holding.

To me, the greatest tragedy of war is not the soldiers' lives and health destroyed--as tragic and horrific as that is, because pretty often, they signed up to be soldiers. To me, the greatest tragedy, the real devastation, is the lives of civilians, especially elderly and infants and children who die in war, either outright from fighting, from bombs and missiles but also from starvation and disease.

When one needs to reach back 100+ years...

Are you using the 'Women should be grateful' argument? After all, minorities and women have had to fight tooth and nail to get into those positions, well... maybe not being in a sewer... and were obstructed by well... men from doing so.

I thought this was a thread full of progressives showing their tits. Glad to be wrong.
Why?
Girls Gone Wild... Progressives Gone Wild.
WHY is HB glad to be wrong? I’m devastated!
It ain't like Playboy models taking off their top, dude. As Seinfeld said, there is good naked and bad naked. I had a kooky, far left elderly relative in West Marin who participated in a nude protest of the Iraq War. This one in fact...I'm not sure which one is her in the picture, but I feel better not knowing, myself:

Marin Women Embody Peace

As usual, the comments in these types of articles are comedy gold.

There has to be a nice set of progressive tits out there …

That's way too much complexity for right wing morons.

Isn't that discrimination against men? Sending them off to die.

Also these right wingers already buy into the idea that "everyone is unequal" so why are they complaining about discrimination?
