Facebook Foregoes Fact Checking

Can't really blame him. From now until 2028 or the nuclear war, whichever comes later, other major media -- Trumtph Social, X, Faux -- will be swamped with lies. It would be corporate suicide for the late Zucky (or whoever replaced him) to challenge the alleged truthy-truths from the trillion-dollar governmental Trump-Musk Bullshit machine.

Fact checking was never really a thing there. The comments under an NPR article on the California fires is loaded with responses from fake accounts. NPR articles posted to facebook are always flooded with foreign and domestic right wing troll accounts.

Scrolling my feed yesterday it was promoting posts by David Wolfe I blocked David Wolfe. Check his twitter for the smorgasbord of right wing conspiracy nonsense he promotes . Similar bullshit content from similar sources immediately replaced it. My only interaction with such content is block and hide. But that is enough interaction to make the algorithm say "ooh, he noticed it". I reckon they figure that if they keep poking then eventually I'll engage. Any eyeball is a good eyeball.

They have never had any problem selling bullshit.

I have been playing with the block and hide feature. I blocked LADbible. That was immediately replaced with ladbible australia. I mostly go on there now for about 10 minutes a day and do nothing but block and hide all content not directly posted by my known real life friends and the flood of disinfo and misinfo and glurgey shit never ends.

Facebook and youtube have always promoted false and misleading content. I noticed it with prominent grifters and conspiracy theorists at least a decade ago. You'd debunk them in their comments so the content creator just blocks you. You make a video debunking them and then they complain to Youtube or Facebook and the platform kills your account to disappear the debunk because the grifter/scammer/conspiracy theorist has lots of subscribers.

I hate Facebook, but it is somewhat useful for posting on for a few niche interests. What sucks are all of the fake Likes out there trying to get you to get scammed.

Then you get the David Attenborough Fans (block). David Attenborough Fan Club (block). David Attenborough Club (block)... etc... The fake pages posting fake stuff. It is harmless, but it is stupid. And you don't know if you are seeing comments by actual people or Bots. Facebook was so unsecure, that there are probably as many fake accounts of people as real ones. Then add in the Bots.

I saw "Geddy Lee" had liked a comment I made. What was funny was that I noticed the like had changed to Van Morrison a bit later. The entire platform is messed up! And this ignoring it sucks as a place to get info. People keep asking the same questions in Q&As because you can't find any of the old info.

Oh David Attenborough Fans and its many iterations is something special.

James Webb is another. I don't get the business model of fake accounts posting fake info or images. Unless Facebook is the one creating the fake content.

Facebook fell into the toilet years ago. It's original purpose was great and a lot of fun, but it's been taken over... etc. etc. etc.

In short, it's not worth taking seriously anymore

BlueSky or Threads is, as I understand, much better. I don't know.

I deleted* my account years ago. I don't miss it.

It was helpful for keeping up with my family (who live on the other side of the planet from me), but I still have email, whatsapp, and the telephone - I have a Telstra plan that lets me make free calls from my mobile to the UK, (a plan which Telstra stopped selling when they realised how generous it is); They keep hinting that I should 'upgrade' to a new plan, but as long as I don't, they are stuck with the contract they signed with me :)

It's a stark contrast from when I first arrived in Australia; The only Internet users were a handful of geeks, and a landline call to the UK cost a dollar a minute. I remember using 0055 to call*, so as to get a line good enough to hear the other party through all the pops and crackles of static.

* I am under no illusion that they actually deleted my information from their servers, but it's increasingly out of date, and frankly I don't much care.

** Telstra used 0011 as the prefix for international dialing, but reserved the best lines for fax machines, which couldn't tolerate too much noise; They advertised using 0055 for international faxes, but these lines were no different from any other, except in that they were newer and so had lower levels of interference. The "hack" was not widely known; It could also get you through at Christmas time when the 0011 lines just led to "All lines to the country you are calling are currently busy..". Everyone called their family in the few hours that it was Christmas in both countries; But nobody was at work, sending faxes on Christmas Day...

It is interesting how the once uber liberal tech titans are seeing first hand how their extreme left ideology has negatively affected business to the extent they can no longer ignore. First it was Musk and now Zuckerburg both were far left but now rapidly moving right. I suspect the google brothers larry and sergey would have revised their business operations by now. Other than their monopoly is so air tight they can continue treating their customers shitty and get by with it until the cows come home.

Is that why the majority of comments to NPR articles for years have been right wing and Russian bots and trolls like “Joy Brown” that dropped stupid turds about Obama/911/crimes against humanity to an article about fire retardants in less time than it takes to read the article. Zuckerberg has let them stick around for years because he is uber liberal? The “Joy Brown” account and countless similar accounts have been shitting all over Facebook for years and Facebook refuses to remove the bots and fake people.

Super liberal of Facebook to promote fucking David Wolfe and his ilk too.

You think Musk and Zuk used to be liberal???

Someone seems to be forgetting that even back in 2015 we all knew Zuckerberg was shilling for Trump and letting Facebook steer the boomers where in turn the boomers steered our economy straight into the clusterfuck we are now in the middle of again.

Voter data was used to feed disinfo in a targeted way in 2015/2016.

This time around the Musk funded PAC used demographics for some fancy ratfucking on Facebook.

But yeah, Zuck is liberal.

Just as a reminder, your bullet punctured and bloodied body would be buried in a ditch somewhere for what you've said... if you actually were dealing with extreme left ideology.

Far left? Chavez would be far left. Not the worst fucking manager to work for.

Yes. Yes he does.

No, not liberal, extreme far left.

I only use it to keep up with my best friend and also to like pro-science and anti-fascist content on there. Ok maybe some cat videos too. And parrots.
