Harvard

They'll get Jordan Peterson, Bret Whineystein, and Michael Behe on the faculty there if they have their way. Really though, they do just want to fuck everything up.

I went to cow college in Virginia and we were proud to have Nikki Giovanni as a professor. Now these GOP assholes are trying to silence such voices. We are going backward so fucking fast.

Project 2025 did their homework. It is a remarkable job they have accomplished. I'd be worthy of a Nobel Prize, if they awarded such things.
Well, Columbia did submit coluntarily, so perhaps they could pull a string and pick up a Pullitzer for the thing.

Harvard has some high caliber individuals lining up behind it. Do they have sufficient resources to hold out for a SCOTUS ruling?
Trump's war on academic freedom may depend on how much sentiment and money it smokes out of the general public, all included.

Certainly SCOTUS will be slow to put a stop to Trump's flaunting of immunity.
Some of it appears to have little purpose beyond staking out ground, probing for for an as yet undiscovered limit to the "immunity" he is allowed, in compelling others to commit crimes in order to attain his illegal ends. If SCOTUS follows suit, they will rule that the ends may be illegal, but the order to pursue them falls under the immunity they previously g(r)ifted him.
So it would be up to rank and file, officers etc to defy the President's order?
Holy shit.
If THOSE people started getting arrested or even pressured, it would consolidate the whole insurrectionist movement, and provoke unlimited pre-emptive pardons to anyone accused of doing Trump's bidding. But nobody will arrest them because the US Marshals who would "normally" do the arresting, are under the executive...

Maybe Jesus will appear to Trump in a dream and take him on a tour of Hell, letting him know he'll be there soon UNLESS he gives everything away to the poor and becomes an ascetic Monk.
Outside of that, I think we just have to root for Ronald McDonald.
Or maybe he'll catch a little sniffle and get a recommendation from his HHS appointee.

A race against time (2026), and I applaud ALL the noise Harvard can make, international influence it can wield and depth of support it can summon, even if most of it has to come from its own grads.
I saw on the news last night that Harvard has about 50 billion bucks they can use to fight Trump. I hope that's right and they do all they can to piss him off. I also read that Columbia U is going to stand up to the felon. These so called Ivy League schools need to start using their funds to fight for democracy!
Harvard has 50 billion?! Seems like an excessive amount. How about instead of accumulating wealth, they lower tuition costs so that middle and lower income students have a chance at attending?
Harvard's endowment is not a single pot of dollars. It is many different funds. most of which have been donated for specific reasons. So, Harvard doesn't have the freedom to distribute all of the endowment.,

So, scholarships are roughly $0.25 billion, but they have $50 billion total? That's a pretty small fraction (0.5%), IMHO. Smaller than I was expecting. I would think they can do better.

I guess to address the rest of the issue, it would be nice to see that actual demands that Trump is placing on these universities. Have seen it? Posting it here would help to clear up and uncertainties about what is going on and keep the discussion on track.
The demand is to kill DEI, where DEI is whatever the heck they want to say it is, as "DEI" isn't actually defined. You want specifics, but the Exec Order is specifically broad.
From "kill DEI" Sec. 4. (b) (iii):
A plan of specific steps or measures to deter DEI programs or principles (whether specifically denominated “DEI” or otherwise) that constitute illegal discrimination or preferences. As a part of this plan, each agency shall identify up to nine potential civil compliance investigations of publicly traded corporations, large non-profit corporations or associations, foundations with assets of 500 million dollars or more, State and local bar and medical associations, and institutions of higher education with endowments over 1 billion dollars;
Bold: This sounds odd to me, like an ordered witch hunt.

Do I understand this correctly?

The Trump maladministration are opposed to DEI, and want it replaced with "viewpoint diversity". DEI is "diversity, equity, and inclusion"; So they want diversity that is inequitable and exclusive - that is, diversity that favours MAGA supporters, and MAGA supporters alone?

"Viewpoint diversity" is the recognition that after almost 400 years of teaching students to be smart, it's about time that they also start teaching students to be dumb; And that in order to learn to be truly dumb, it is necessary to be as inequitable and exclusive as possible. Is that really what they are saying here?

You're reading correctly through the doublespeak, but that is not their stated viewpoint, and plenty of people are still absurdly willing to take them at face value. I've heard from two people today, one administrator and one tenured professor, variations on "but they say they're encouraging diverse viewpoints, isn't that a good thing?"

This letter would itself be "flagged for review" if it turned up in a DOGE personnel review, it says the D word...

If your test scores are good enough financial aid exists.

And they shouldn't be spending that $50B (if that's the right number, I haven't looked.) That's seed corn, you spend the net-of-inflation earnings. Which should be in the ballpark of $1B/yr if that $50B is right.

Actually I thought I read Harvard was going away from tuition for people from families making under a couple hundred thousand.

Can Harvard revoke the law degrees of the people in this administration supporting its insane interpretations of the law?

Harvard is even more of a clusterfuck of bigotry than I thought.

Across 500 Pages, Harvard Task Force Reports Detail Hostility on Campus and Urge Broad Policy Changes

Harvard’s twin task forces on combating bias toward Jewish, Israeli, Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian affiliates released their long-awaited reports on Tuesday afternoon — describing an atmosphere of fear and exclusion, as well as deep divisions over curricula, protests, and the scope of academic freedom.

The reports, each hundreds of pages long, urged Harvard to implement sweeping changes that would alter everything from the University’s oversight of programs and disciplinary processes to its academic programming and admissions policies.

As a result of the task forces’ findings, Harvard will instruct school deans to strengthen academic review processes for courses and curricula, will review admissions policies at each school to ensure they evaluate candidates’ willingness to engage with diverse perspectives, and is “actively exploring” the establishment of a major new center for pluralism.

In a message releasing the reports, Garber described accounts in the reports as “searing” and lamented “the reported willingness of some students to treat each other with disdain rather than sympathy, eager to criticize and ostracize.”

“Some students reported being pushed by their peers to the periphery of campus life because of who they are or what they believe,” Garber wrote. He apologized for the times when the University “failed to meet the high expectations we rightfully set for our community.”

Jewish and Israeli students told task force members that they experienced social shunning and hostility from peers who blamed them for the Israeli government’s actions. Some said peers would refuse to talk with them because they came from “a genocidal country” or attend social gatherings where Israeli students were present. Several reported dropping classes they felt were one-sidedly anti-Israel.

Muslim students, meanwhile, said their peers lost jobs over their involvement in Muslim faith organizations and faced verbal and physical abuse on campus. Palestinian students said they found navigating daily life challenging and isolating with the ongoing war in Gaza — a feeling only exacerbated by a perceived lack of empathy from administrators, faculty, and staff.

In one account, a Muslim student said an individual poured alcohol over their Palestinian friend as he was standing outside of his dorm wearing a keffiyeh, a traditional garment often worn for pro-Palestine advocacy. Another anonymous student recounted being called a “terrorist,” “baby-killer,” “towelhead,” and “antisemite” during their freshman year because of their decision to wear a keffiyeh.

Holy fuck! Snobs and jerks at Harvard?!!? Isn't this the Skull and Bones place (or was that Yale... both)? Intolerance is unacceptable. Thinking this shit is new at college... ignorant.

The richest part is that programs to combat this are usually lambasted by the likes of thebeave because the school is trying to make it too safe.

Take it easy there, Tiger. Where did I claim this "shit is new"? And what programs are you referring to, and where/when have I lambasted them?

Harvard Revokes Tenure From Francesca Gino, Business School Professor Accused of Data Fraud

Harvard revoked tenure from Francesca Gino, the Harvard Business School professor who has been fighting data fraud allegations for nearly four years, and ended her employment at the University last week, a Harvard spokesperson confirmed.

The move concluded Gino’s two-year battle to keep her position at the school — and marked a historic penalty for a faculty member at Harvard, where no professor is known to have lost their tenure since at least the 1940s, when rules for the academic protection were formalized.

Gino, a behavioral scientist who became famous for studying honesty and ethical behavior, was accused of manipulating observations to better support her conclusions. Before her work came under scrutiny, she was a prominent researcher in her field and the fifth-highest paid employee at Harvard in 2018 and 2019, receiving more than $1 million in compensation each year.

WTF, Harvard? Your president, Claudine Gay resigns due to plagarism, your campus reeks of racism and a professor who studies honesty and ethics (with a $1 million per year salary to boot) falsifies her research and loses her tenure?

Well, to be fair, Harvard doesn't have cabinet positions to hand out, so what else are they going to do?

Reeks of racism? What, because the campus isn't 75% Asian?

No, because students there are not racist enough against Palestinians, haven't you been paying attention?

Don't you know that if you're not actively applying to be an Israeli Zionist Jew and settle Palestinian land, you are an anti-semite?

Actually, I was thinking more about the incidents cited in my earlier post (#31).

“Some students reported being pushed by their peers to the periphery of campus life because of who they are or what they believe,” Garber wrote. He apologized for the times when the University “failed to meet the high expectations we rightfully set for our community.”

But thanks for the reminder about Asian discrimination in admissions.
