Mr. Hanid Ortiz, a dual Venezuelan American citizen, served 19 years in the Army and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Iraq. He suffered multiple physical and mental injuries as a result of his military service, according to an Army court document, and then was forced out of the military after pleading guilty to fraud and larceny.

This guy sounds like he has a serious case of PTSD. Combat related PTSD often leaves a person with a lot of anger and in some cases it makes them violent. He belongs in a mental ward in a VA hospital, where they can at least attempt to treat his PTSD while protecting everyone else from him. Anyone else remember the days when we had mental hospitals that included wards for what was known as the criminally insane? They've been closed down now, so mentally ill people who commit violent crimes end up in one of our terrible inhumane prisons.

If anyone belongs in a prison, it's dear leader. But, he does so many horrible illegal things on a daily basis that it's hard to keep up with them. Nothing he does surprises me anymore.

While I agree there's book-cooking in crime reports it's not going to be that sudden. The books only have a big effect in the short term when you get things like Sweden changing the definition of what constitutes rape as opposed to sexual assault. (The crime rate didn't change, the classification did.)

Crime dropped dramatically because crime spiked around Covid and the BLM issues and then returned to normal. And crime is at a 30 year low because of some combination of <legal abortion, removing lead from gasoline>, the effects are sufficiently intertwined that we can't be sure. The data seems to point more towards legal abortion but it's not conclusive. The right has been in ever greater panic mode about trying to prove crime is out of control but the data simply doesn't support that. Crime has been in a long term decline and much of what we have now is due to the drug war.

We could easily get another 52% drop by sending the leaders of the DEA to the firing squad and firing the rest of them with a prohibition against ever working in law enforcement again.

ICE shared a false social media post by right-wing group Libs of Tic Tok. Connecticut lawmaker getting threats because of it.

Federal officials shared a post on social media last weekend that wrongly accused a Connecticut state lawmaker of publishing detailed location information about deportation efforts by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, triggering a torrent of harassment against him.

The lawmaker, Corey P. Paris, of Stamford, said that he had received threats against his life and his relatives. A spokesman with the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection said the State Police were investigating the incident.

In a message posted on Instagram, Mr. Paris, a Democrat, told followers on Friday that he had learned of immigration enforcement efforts in his district and wanted to warn residents to “remain vigilant.”

The influential right-wing account Libs of TikTok then shared his post on X, claiming that he was “doxxing ICE’s live location” and “helping illegals evade arrest and impeding ICE,” even though Mr. Paris had not named any specific places where agents had been seen. The lawmaker said in an interview that he has never shared exact locations of ICE activity.

The Libs of TikTok post tagged ICE’s official account and urged the agency to “charge him,” referring to Mr. Paris. ICE officials republished the post the next day and tagged the Justice Department’s account.

“When ICE re-shared that post, it didn’t just validate misinformation; it legitimized dangerous rhetoric that put my safety at risk,” Mr. Paris said. “And federal agencies should not be in the business, quite frankly, of targeting elected officials for speaking up about community safety. That’s our job.”

The federal workers who shared this should have serious consequences and this Libs of TikTok look like a right wing terrorist group to me.
